Rush University Medical Center, a nationally recognized clinical and academic institution, and the teaching hospital for Rush Medical and Nursing Colleges, located in downtown Chicago, invites applications for the position of Division Chief of General Internal Medicine.

The Division Chief of General Internal Medicine (GIM) will be responsible for providing strategic, innovative, and operational leadership, and will be accountable for the clinical and academic performance of the largest division within the Department of Internal Medicine. The successful candidate will have the credentials to merit a faculty appointment of Associate Professor or Professor and will possess a demonstrated experience in innovation and value-based care. In addition, (s)he will also be committed to mentoring faculty, trainees, and medical students. Preferred candidates will have a strong record of collaborative leadership and commitment to excellence in clinical, research, and academic services. Candidates with ongoing research achievements and community engagements are highly desirable.

As a leader within the Department of Internal Medicine, the Division Chief of General Internal Medicine will work closely with the Department Chairperson and leadership to provide an energetic and inventive vision for maintaining and growing clinical and academic programs developing strategic interdisciplinary teams for furthering research, and continuing faculty development   . The minimum requirements for the preferred candidates include:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience as a physician leader at a large medical center (academic medical centers are preferred, but not required)
  • Experience building and managing a large practice
  • Experience in leading programmatic development 
  • National reputation
  • Experience with obtaining and managing research grants (NIH, industry, or philanthropic)  
  • Experience working with value-based care plans
  • MD, MD-PhD or DO degree
  • Active board certification in General Internal Medicine
  • Fellowship trained
  • Licensed or able to obtain a medical license in the State of Illinois without restriction

The Division of General Internal Medicine at Rush is committed to providing exceptional patient-centered care, training and developing clinicians, and conduct research.  With over 50 full-time faculty members, it is the largest division in the Department of Internal Medicine.  The division is academically engaged and growing.  In the U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 Best Graduate Schools rankings, Rush Medical College was listed as one of the best in the nation with programs in Research and Primary Care placing 64th and 69th respectively in the rankings.  The division actively participates in multiple clinical trials, as well as educational and clinical operational research.  The division currently serves the Chicagoland and its western suburbs across 9 clinical sites, with 2 new clinical sites scheduled to open in Fall 2022.
