The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center is seeking a BE/BC orthopaedic surgeon with sub-specialty training in sports medicine. Fellowship training or equivalent experience is required.

The candidate must be interested in scholarly endeavors and the promotion of research activities.  A strong commitment to patient care as well as the teaching of residents, medical students, nurses and other healthcare providers is required. Strong clinical, administrative and interpersonal skills are needed.  The successful candidate is expected to assume administrative responsibilities, mentor residents, develop a referral program and provide game coverage.

The SUNY Downstate Medical Center is the only academic medical center in Brooklyn, a borough of 2.7 million people and the largest medical school in the state. There is a large existing patient population in place that will allow the candidate to quickly establish a large clinical practice. The Division is staffed with orthopaedic surgeons, primary care attendings, primary care sports fellows, orthopaedic residents, rehabilitation residents, physical therapists and athletic trainers.  Aside from the four integrated affiliate hospitals in our system, the Division of Sports Medicine has a large outreach program.  University Sports Medicine is the main provider of sports medicine care in the borough.  We cover the majority of high schools and colleges, from Division 1 to Division 3, as well as myriad club teams.  Downstate is a Certified Impact Center and our outreach program is expanding to include sports optimization and ACL prevention services.  Research facilities include a biomechanics laboratory and a motion analysis system.

Competitive academic salary includes an excellent benefits package and the potential for significant income through the practice plan.  Salary and level of appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications of the applicant.
