The University of Pittsburgh and its principal partner, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), together have raised the standard of scientific and medical excellence in southwestern Pennsylvania and have positioned biomedical science and health care as a driving force behind the region’s economy. The success of their collaborative efforts is attributable to a well-defined symbiotic relationship and a combined mission: to train tomorrow’s health care specialists and biomedical scientists, engage in groundbreaking research that will advance understanding of the causes and treatments of disease, and deliver outstanding patient care. The University of Pittsburgh encompasses six schools of the health sciences, all which share in an academic mission to provide a broad range of programs in education, biomedical research, training, health promotion, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease and disability. The University of Pittsburgh maintains collaborative relationships with Carnegie Mellon University, the RAND Corporation, Intel, the public-private partnership known as the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, and various other research and technology ventures. The University of Pittsburgh as a whole, and the School of Medicine in particular, have both more than doubled their NIH support since 1998. The University of Pittsburgh is the only school within the last 50 years to break into the top 10 NIH-funded institutions. The School of Medicine and affiliated health sciences have invested significantly in new research infrastructure and faculty recruitment.
