Director of the Mount Sinai Heart and Cardiovascular Institute

The Mount Sinai Health System

 New York, NY

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) and The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) have launched a nationwide search for the next Director of the Mount Sinai Heart and the Cardiovascular Institute.  The individual who assumes this leadership position will oversee all aspects of clinical cardiology, research and educational programs relating to cardiovascular disease across the School and Health System.

The Cardiovascular Institute is one of the nation’s pre-eminent programs, consistently ranking among the best for both clinical care and NIH-funded research.  Current Director Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, an internationally renowned academic leader in cardiology, has developed a program of unparalleled excellence during nearly four decades at Mount Sinai.  His successor will be expected to build on this remarkable foundation.

The Director will report to the Dean of the School and the Chief Executive Officer of the Health System in a role that encompasses:

  • Clinical Programs - Overseeing all aspects of cardiovascular medicine across the MSHS, including overall administration, program development, and faculty recruitment;
  • Research Programs – Overseeing the research activities of the Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) and the strategic development of its clinical, basic and translational programs;
  • Educational Programs – Overseeing cardiology fellowships, Continuing Medical Education and junior faculty development, and collaborating with the Department of Medicine to advance the education of medicine residents in the area of cardiology.

The MSHS is one of the largest, most diverse academic health systems in the United States.  It is composed of eight member hospitals and many outpatient programs across the New York metropolitan area.  The ISMMS, one of the nation’s leading medical schools, is ranked #12 in the country in NIH funding.

The Cardiovascular Institute sees nearly 104,000 patients annually.  Over 200 cardiologists are on staff, and 74 cardiology fellows are in training. Within the Institute, the CVRC conducts basic, translational and clinical investigations, with interests ranging from cardiovascular systems biology to cell biology to gene therapy, as well as to cardiac disease detection, prevention and treatment modalities, and resolving health disparities in the U.S. and globally.

The ideal candidate for Director of the of the Mount Sinai Heart  and the Cardiovascular Institute will be a dynamic academic cardiologist who is a distinguished national and international leader in his or her field of expertise. The candidate must have a proven track record in clinical care, research, education and administration. Applicants must be board-certified in one or more cardiac subspecialties, and must hold or be eligible for a New York State medical license.
