Chairman Department of Surgery – Valley Health System General Surgery Residency

Independence Physician Management a subsidiary of UHS, is conducting a national search for an experienced academic surgeon to lead and serve as the next Chairman of the Department of Surgery for the Valley Health System General Surgery Residency.

The Chairman of the Department of Surgery is a unique opportunity to provide senior oversight, strategic direction, and support the faculty that serve the Valley Health System General Surgery Residency program. The program was founded in 2019 and is approved to graduate four chief residents per year and host a total of 28 residents. The Chairman will serve in a supervisory and mentorship role for an expanding number of employed surgical faculty and over 40 community faculty members across the Las Vegas valley and the Southwestern United States.

The Valley Health System is one of the largest healthcare providers in southern Nevada with six acute care facilities and over 40,000 surgical procedures performed annually. The core site for the General Surgery Residency is Henderson Hospital, a state of the art 239-bed facility that was named “Top Teaching Hospital” by The Leapfrog Group for the second year in a row.  The Chairman is an employed position.

Within the Department of Surgery, we strive to create a culture of collegial inquiry where our residents can work, learn, and provide a high quality of patient care in an environment conducive to education.  The Chairman will be responsible for working closely with the General Surgery Residency Program Director to establish and maintain this culture amidst the dynamic landscape of healthcare in Las Vegas. The primary role through which the Chairman will accomplish this is the recruitment, mentorship, and development of an academic faculty. This position provides salary support for 30% protected academic/administrative time.

The ideal candidate will be a nationally recognized, experienced surgeon with demonstrated success in clinical work, education, research, and administration. The candidate will understand the role of culture in organizational success and medical education; and will have a demonstrated track record of professionalism and promotion of the concept of diversity and inclusion in all forms throughout their career. This is a unique opportunity to helm a Department of Surgery that is a true hybrid of academic and community faculty in a major healthcare system. It will require a visionary leader who is willing to work collaboratively with the Program Director, Chief Academic Officer, and System leadership to guide the Department through this exciting period of change. This in an opportunity to do something truly revolutionary.
