The Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University seeks a Chief for the Division of Adolescent Medicine. The successful candidate will be a recognized national or international leader in Adolescent Medicine and will be responsible for the supervision and development of clinical services, education, research, and community engagement activities for members of the Division within the Department of Pediatrics, other relevant areas of the Stanford School of Medicine, the Stanford Health Care system, including Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCHS) and its partner sites, and the university. Appointment may be at the level of Associate or Full Professor and may occur either within the University Tenure Line or University Medical Line. 

  • The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching.
  • The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the University Medical Line is excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic needs the individual is expected to fulfill.

Faculty rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

The typical candidate would have board certification in adolescent medicine or comparable experience and training including outside the US.

The Division of Adolescent Medicine is dedicated to promoting the physical and emotional well-being of adolescents and young adults through clinical care, education, research, leadership, and advocacy.  The clinical program is multi-faceted.

  • Out-patient clinical care is offered through the Teen and Young Adult Clinic, Adolescent Gynecology Clinic, Eating Disorders Clinic, Gender Clinic, Weight Clinic, the Teen Health Van, Vaden Student Health Services, and Juvenile Hall.
  • A teaching and consult service is active at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford.
  • A nationally renowned dedicated 15-bed unit cares for patients with eating disorders and other medical/psychiatric illnesses.
  • The division has strong collaborative relationships across Stanford University and Stanford Children’s Health, including with the Divisions of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Pediatric Endocrinology within the School of Medicine, and the departments of Social Service and Clinical Nutrition within Stanford Children’s Health. 
  • The Division of Adolescent Medicine also has active alliances with the Santa Clara Juvenile Detention Facility, the Vaden College Health clinic at Stanford, and a Sports Medicine Clinic.

 

 

The educational program provides education and training at several levels.

  • The Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Center for Adolescent Health at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford offer a 3-year ACGME accredited fellowship program in Pediatric Adolescent Medicine. The division’s postdoctoral fellowship training program provides world-class instruction in the management of adolescents and young adults at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of care, and provides the requisite skills and knowledge to become independent investigators. 
  • Stanford medical students and pediatric residents rotate through inpatient and outpatient services and gain exposure to a wide array of medical and psychosocial problems encountered by adolescents and young adults from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

 

 

Research within the Division of Adolescent Medicine focuses on understanding and promoting adolescent and young adult health and preventing engagement in health risk behaviors.  Notable studies include the following:

  • Substance use prevention, including identifying individual and social factors contributing to adolescents’ and young adults’ substance use and school-based tobacco and marijuana prevention programs
  • Medical complications of eating disorders, including refeeding syndrome, amenorrhea and resumption of menses, bone health in adolescents with eating disorders
  • Sexual and reproductive health, including sexual decision-making and adolescents’ and young adults’ access to and use of contraception and emergency contraception and treatment of sexually transmitted infections
  • Gender-based violence, including identifying modifiable factors responsible for such violence, and developing and evaluating violence prevention programs both in the United States and internationally

The division values community engagement and diversity, equity and inclusion.  An R25 grant encourages youth from marginalized communities to pursue academic training.  Division faculty consult routinely with local and state officials on issues regarding adolescent prevention and health promotion.
