The CUNY School of Medicine at The City College of New York (CCNY), is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CUNY School Of Medicine also offers a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies (PA). Our mission is to provide access to medical education to talented individuals from social, ethnic and racial backgrounds historically underrepresented in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under-served communities with a special emphasis on primary care and reducing health disparities. As a growing school, our philanthropic areas of growth will be in student scholarships and support to our educational and research missions.

Reporting to the Dean of CUNY School of Medicine, the Director of Development will be a valued member of the senior management team. Working collaboratively with the leadership of the college's foundation and Office of Institutional Advancement and Communications, s/he will coordinate, develop and implement an overarching strategy for fundraising that encompasses both short- and long-term philanthropic goals. S/he will have fundamental responsibility for securing major gifts, and facilitate corporate and foundation relations. and cultivating donors who have the capacity to give at the seven-figure level and above. This position is also responsible for working closely with faculty and staff alumni relations and communications initiatives, both external and internal.

The Director's responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the execution of a fundraising strategy consistent with the school mission and values in close collaboration with the CUNY School Of Medicine senior leadership team
  • Develop and implement a strategic major gifts plan and programs needed to sustain major gift support, including capital campaign initiatives
  • Develop and cultivate a pool of major gift prospective donors
  • Manage the cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of existing donors; create opportunities to keep donors closely engaged in CUNY School of Medicine work
  • Develop and implement a plan for ongoing philanthropic support
  • Negotiate complex gift agreements, memoranda of understanding, and other documents to concretize donor and institutional commitments and ensure documents comply with all city, state, and federal financial regulations
  • Identify and develop relationships with new and diverse sources of funding
  • Research and write proposals and presentations for internal and external audiences
  • Oversee development operating and tracking systems to ensure the effective performance of the development function
  • Help manage the Dean's Executive Advisory Board and Sophie Davis Alumni Board provide senior leadership team and Board with regular reports on progress against goals
  • Assist with oversight of the work of the Alumni Relations staff as it relates to the support of the Alumni Board of Directors and the planning, implementation and promotion of alumni programs that support the school's strategic plan, and the establishment and nurturing of relationships with a wide range of alumni
  • Provide oversight and strategic direction to the CUNY School of Medicine’s efforts and identity as it relates to the marketing, branding, public relations, and communications functions of the school, both in print and non-print
  • Oversee events, including press events, symposia, cultivation, and stewardship events
  • Develop, manage and retain a first-rate team of professionals focused on external affairs, development and alumni relations
  • Provide strategic direction to and oversee the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.
  • Other duties as assigned


This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.

The preferred candidate will be a skilled, knowledgeable fundraiser with a passion for the life sciences and demonstrated ability to convey the value CUNY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE is bringing to New York and the community at large. S/he will bring a broad strategic vision and the ability to implement that vision through their own hard work and by motivating and leading a team to accomplish ambitious ends.

Preferred experience and attributes will include:

  • Minimum of eight years of relevant fund-raising experience, preferably in higher education, medical schools or academic health centers
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Extensive experience focusing on major gifts, including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship; strong understanding of the donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship process
  • Experience with and leading alumni relations initiatives;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute major gift activities;
  • Ability to work closely with the CUNY School of Medicine Dean and her leadership team to solicit and secure funds
  • A proven track record of securing seven-figure gifts;
  • Experience planning and implementing campaigns at the $10M level and above;
  • Experience managing grant writing processes preferred;
  • Demonstrated organizational, managerial, leadership and negotiation skills;
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences;
  • Proven ability to build, strong and lasting relationships with donors, board members, and senior leadership teams
  • Resourceful self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit and positive outlook; a “roll-up-your sleeves” attitude;
  • Proven ability to work with a high level of independence, maintain confidentiality and prioritize assignments and CUNY School of Medicine’s needs;
  • Ability to cultivate and establish relationships with business and community leaders, as well as to interact effectively with diverse groups having competing interests and priorities within CUNY School of Medicine and the community
