Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine

UMass Chan Medical School & UMass Memorial Health

Worcester, MA

The Department of Medicine at the UMass Chan Medical School (UMCMS) and UMass Memorial Health (UMMH) seeks a physician leader to serve as the Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) within the Department of Medicine. Reporting to David McManus, MD, Chair of the Department of Medicine, the Chief of GIM will promote continued clinical and operational excellence within the Division while supporting the clinical staff and mentoring faculty in their scholarly interests, as well as their educational and research efforts.  UMCMS is well positioned to expand its research program, with opportunities to grow in population health, health equity, health services, and clinical research.

The Department of Medicine is focused on leveraging academic opportunities, including its well-regarded educational programs, one of the top NIH-funded internal medicine research portfolios in the nation, and a patient mix that includes some of the most complex cases in central Massachusetts, to build upon the prodigious successes already seen in the Medical School. The Division of GIM is a leader in tertiary primary care and the Chief will have the opportunity to expand chronic care management, transitional care management from the hospital, team based care, embedded specialty access, and clinic redesign.  Other important opportunities include continuing the division’s leadership in population health efforts through high performance in quality measures, and the important initiatives around their ACO and Primary Care First.  The next Chief will also provide vision and direction around the provision of specialty care in areas such as transgender health, addiction, women’s health, and HIV. UMCMS recently received a $175M unrestricted donation from the Chan family to support the recruitment of faculty, support biomedical research, offer financial support to students, and to expand UMCMS’s important public service mission.

The Chief of the Division of GIM will be committed to providing superior patient care and strive to improve systems and processes to reach UMCMS and UMMH goals. The Chief will also seize upon the opportunities present at UMCMS to expand the research and education offerings of the division. The Chief will look to grow the division and mentor the faculty, and continue advancing the diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the division and department.
