Position description

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Medicine (http://med.ucsd.edu/) at University of California, San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and is actively seeking candidates for a part-time Project Scientist .

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is seeking a project scientist in the laboratory of Dr Atul Malhotra. Two major research foci are the pathogenesis of sleep apnea and the metabolic/cardiovascular complications of sleep disorders. The pathogenesis studies include anatomical ones using imaging, upper airway physiology, and control of breathing. These studies are ultimately designed to define the various contributors to apnea in different individuals. The ultimate goal is to define specific therapeutic targets for OSA patients of varying phenotypes. The rat/mouse model studies are exploring the neurochemistry of the various components of upper airway reflexes with an eventual goal of defining potential pharmacological targets for OSA therapy. The metabolic/cardiovascular studies seek to separate obesity effects from OSA influences by assessing a host of autonomic, microcirculatory, inflammatory, hemostatic, metabolic, and hemodynamic variables.

The Project Scientist will offer significant innovative contributions to project design, problem solve, analyze and integrate data, and write up and present results. The successful candidate will also write proposals for funding of both their own projects and in collaboration with the PI.

Appointment will be at Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist level based on background and years of experience.
