Director of Research Training & Education

The Director of Scholarly Education & Training in the Department of Emergency Medicine will play a critical role in advancing the research, educational, and faculty development missions of Department of Emergency Medicine. In working with faculty, fellows, and trainees and in collaboration with departmental leaders the Director will help develop research scholars, promote research knowledge translation to stakeholder audiences, and increase the production of generalizable knowledge in the department.

Summary

General responsibilities include

  • Designing, implementing, and monitoring research workshops and skills development programs for faculty with an eye towards increasing the quality of projects and grant proposals.
  • Designing and implementing novel scholarship-focused fellowship and faculty development training programs.
  • In collaboration with other faculty, facilitating research skills development and knowledge transfer by assisting with curriculum development for residents and fellows.
  • Will work to enhance scholarship in the department related to population health, social emergency medicine, mixed-methods research, and ethics.
  • Liaising with educational leaders with the department and its divisions, as well as across MCW to identify and enhance training opportunities for residents, fellows, and faculty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Design, implement, and monitoring research workshops and skills development programs for faculty, fellows, and residents.
  2. Oversee the departmental participation in the Medical Student Summer Research Program.
  3. Advise and support faculty on appropriate research design, methodology, collaborations and dissemination.
  4. Mentor and advise faculty and residents on research career trajectories.
  5. Oversee research staff and infrastructural support provided to faculty, fellows, and trainees. This responsibility involves guiding the bimonthly research operations meetings, peer research consultation service, and quarterly research workshops.
  6. As designated by the VCRS, serve in leadership role(s) on department research committees (QA/QI, Research Oversight, etc.).
  7. Along with VCRS, conduct ongoing evaluation of the implementation of mentorship programs within the Department with appropriate metrics.
  8. Maintain a funded research portfolio.

Resources and Reporting

The Director of Scholarly Education & Training will have appropriate negotiated protected time for administrative duties. In addition, they will be supported by dedicated research and educational staff within the department. The Director will primarily report to the Vice Chair for Scholarship and Research.
