Position Highlights

The University of Arizona College of Medicine- Phoenix (CoM-P) invites applications for the Chair of OB/GYN.  This is an opportunity for an outstanding clinical and academic leader with a national/international reputation as a respected and accomplished academician, clinician and educator.  The Department of OB/GYN includes 8 physician employed faculty members. The department is supported by a large number of subspeciality private practice entities providing clinical and in-hospital coverage. The department currently hosts 36 residents, 4 Maternal Fetal Medicine fellows, and 3 Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery fellows. Faculty provide clinical services and mentor trainees at the Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix and Scottsdale and Ahwatukee outreach clinics throughout the city and surrounding area. The department is experiencing rapid growth of the clinical enterprise with year-over-year increases of approximately 10% in surgical volume, and 120% each in clinic visit volumes while the hospital realizes over 6,000 deliveries per year.

The Chair will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of academic, research, and clinical programs of the Department. The Chair will have financial authority over the state-appropriated budget assigned to the Department, extramural research funding received, philanthropic funding, and other financial matters for the Department in accordance with applicable University policies and practices. In strategic consultation with leadership from UAHS, COM-P, Banner University Medical Group (BUMG) and Banner- University Medical Center Phoenix (B-UMCP), the Chair will direct the recruitment and retention of division chiefs and faculty who will report to the Chair. The Chair will have program oversight and management responsibility for all departmental residency, fellowship, and undergraduate medical educational programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

As the chief academic and administrative officer for the Department of OB/GYN, provide leadership that promotes professional development of existing faculty members and attracts highly motivated and exceptional diverse faculty, staff, and students to the Department. The Chair will ensure that the Department is recruiting the best faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals to provide a teaching environment of the highest quality and integrity and foster clinical and research programs of national distinction through innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree.
  • Board Certified in OB/GYN.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in Arizona.
  • Academic credentials to support the rank of a senior faculty position
  • Actively engaged in clinical care and education.
  • National/international reputation as a respected and accomplished clinician, educator, and/or clinical translational researcher.
  • Substantial and progressive leadership achievement in an academic medical center.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to recruit, retain and mentor junior faculty and support senior faculty in their research, teaching, clinical and administrative endeavors.
  • Experience in the workings of a Department of OB/GYN related to research initiatives, faculty affairs, operations, key hospital interactions, graduate and undergraduate education and fund raising.
  • Track record as a creative and strategic thinker who can envision and manage for the future.
  • Ability to build and lead teams, and to develop strong ties and connections with external constituencies and individuals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of finances in healthcare administration and academic medicine.
