Position Highlights

The University of Arizona College of Medicine- Phoenix (CoM-P) invites applications for the Chair of OB/GYN.  This is an opportunity for an outstanding clinical and academic leader with a national/international reputation as a respected and accomplished academician, clinician and educator.  The Department of OB/GYN includes 8 physician employed faculty members. The department is supported by a large number of subspeciality private practice entities providing clinical and in-hospital coverage. The department currently hosts 36 residents, 4 Maternal Fetal Medicine fellows, and 3 Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery fellows. Faculty provide clinical services and mentor trainees at the Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix and Scottsdale and Ahwatukee outreach clinics throughout the city and surrounding area. The department is experiencing rapid growth of the clinical enterprise with year-over-year increases of approximately 10% in surgical volume, and 120% each in clinic visit volumes while the hospital realizes over 6,000 deliveries per year.

The Chair will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of academic, research, and clinical programs of the Department. The Chair will have financial authority over the state-appropriated budget assigned to the Department, extramural research funding received, philanthropic funding, and other financial matters for the Department in accordance with applicable University policies and practices. In strategic consultation with leadership from UAHS, COM-P, Banner University Medical Group (BUMG) and Banner- University Medical Center Phoenix (B-UMCP), the Chair will direct the recruitment and retention of division chiefs and faculty who will report to the Chair. The Chair will have program oversight and management responsibility for all departmental residency, fellowship, and undergraduate medical educational programs.

This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine - Phoenix for all academic activities. Consistent with the Academic Affiliation Agreement (AAA) between the University of Arizona and Banner Health, the Chair will have a matrix reporting relationship to the Chief Executive Officer of the Banner University Medical Group (BUMG) and CEO of Banner – University Medical Division Phoenix for all clinical activities conducted at B-UMCP.

Consistent with the College's foundational principle of collaboration, the Chair will work in close collaboration and partnership with other Chairs at the College of Medicine - Phoenix, University of Arizona Health Sciences (UAHS) Deans, Department Heads, BUMC-P clinical service physician executive leaders, and with the College's clinical affiliates and research partners. The Chair engages and interacts frequently with the University of Arizona academic leadership and support units, the University of Arizona Foundation, Banner – University Medicine leadership, key external stakeholders, and community officials.

Banner University Medicine
In 2015, Banner Health merged with the University of Arizona Health Network to form Banner University Medicine. At the heart of this merger is academic medicine - research, teaching and patient care - across three academic medical centers in Phoenix and Tucson. Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMC-P) is currently licensed for 766 beds. In 2019, BUMC-P constructed a new tower with 278 beds, but only netted an addition of 33 to the campus. Campus has 378 private rooms and features a total of 24 operating rooms (OR’s) with shell space for 4 more OR’s that will be built out when needed. The hospital is located 1 mile away from the CoM-P campus.

Duties & Responsibilities

As the chief academic and administrative officer for the Department of OB/GYN, provide leadership that promotes professional development of existing faculty members and attracts highly motivated and exceptional diverse faculty, staff, and students to the Department. The Chair will ensure that the Department is recruiting the best faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals to provide a teaching environment of the highest quality and integrity and foster clinical and research programs of national distinction through innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. 

Specific duties include:

Educational and training programs. The Chair will collaborate with Academic Affairs and other educational offices at the College to ensure the department and his/her faculty are advancing the mission of the medical student, graduate student, and graduate medical education teaching programs. The Chair is responsible for maintaining liaison with other clinical and/or basic science departments to foster an integrated teaching environment for the College. As the educational leader of the Department, ensure an excellent teaching program for the students, residents, and fellows who are receiving education and training within the Department.

Research programs. The Chair has the responsibility to encourage and support research creativity and productivity within the department, across the College and UAHS and with the College's key partners. In strategic partnership with leadership stakeholders, the Chair will build targeted research programs with emphasis on attaining national recognition as measured by level of external, peer reviewed funding. The Chair will foster a culture of interdisciplinary research through collaboration with the numerous affiliated departments and centers.

  • Patient care programs.
    Build subspecialty expertise in the department to offer referring physicians and patients tertiary and quaternary OB/GYN Services in the region including:
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Gynecologic Oncology in collaboration with Banner MD Anderson
  • Advanced Gynecologic Surgery
  • Urogynecology and Pelvic Floor Medicine Program
  • Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS)
  • Female Sexual Medicine
  • Assess training and education programs and the clinical substrate to support these programs at BUMCP as well as Banner Health entities in the valley.  Develop a plan to address priorities and issues identified.  Specialty divisions may be in alignment with community providers, employed faculty, or a hybrid of both
  • 2) Work in collaboration with Neonatologists to build upon robust Perinatal/Neonatal medicine program in place at BUMCP and identify additional opportunities to serve the community
  • 3) Assess all community partnerships in place today for value (Educational, Clinical, Financial) and recommend those to expand, contract and optimize/maintain.
  • 4) Collaborate with system dyad partner for Women’s Health to promote system level quality, quality/performance metrics for the Clinically Integrated Network

Minimum Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree.
  • Board Certified in OB/GYN.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in Arizona.
  • Academic credentials to support the rank of a senior faculty position
  • Actively engaged in clinical care and education.
  • National/international reputation as a respected and accomplished clinician, educator, and/or clinical translational researcher.
  • Substantial and progressive leadership achievement in an academic medical center.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to recruit, retain and mentor junior faculty and support senior faculty in their research, teaching, clinical and administrative endeavors.
  • Experience in the workings of a Department of OB/GYN related to research initiatives, faculty affairs, operations, key hospital interactions, graduate and undergraduate education and fund raising.
  • Track record as a creative and strategic thinker who can envision and manage for the future.
  • Ability to build and lead teams, and to develop strong ties and connections with external constituencies and individuals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of finances in healthcare administration and academic medicine.
