Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago, Illinois, is seeking an Endocrinology Section Chief located within Medicine Service Line. The Endocrine Section Chief oversees the day-to-day clinical operations of the Endocrinology Section. The Section Chief of Endocrine will direct the patient care within the division, ensure appropriate coverage for patients, and provide specific guidelines for physician, physician assistant and nurse practitioner performance expectations. This position involves overseeing the administrative functions of the section, overseeing the residency/fellowship program, evaluating and implementing new technologies as related to Endocrine and overseeing the quality improvement program. He/she will monitor staff and ensure all paperwork, education, and that training for providers is being met and oversee future recruitment. This position will need to maintain good relationships with Nursing and other services necessary for the smooth functioning of the Endocrine Section. The Section Chief plays an integral role with identifying and addressing any deficiencies or areas of improvement and implementing corrective actions or procedures to address.

In addition to the administrative duties mentioned above, the Section Chief performs clinical and research management and other supervisory functions, either directly or through delegated authority and include:

  • Clinical functions involving identifying symptoms of patients who present to the clinic that may be subtle or present with overlapping symptoms due to more complex diagnoses.
  • Diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with endocrine diseases according to acceptable methods and techniques.
  • Directing the care of Endocrine patients to include the oversight of medical extenders, and other paraprofessional and administrative personnel when necessary.
  • Facilitating patient access to continuing medical care by appropriate referrals to other healthcare providers.
  • Performing chart reviews and coordinating with Hospitalists regarding patient care issues.
  • Documenting patient care data in electronic medical records, such as: history and physical exams, daily progress notes for inpatients, encounters for outpatients, consult notes and entering both new and renewal prescriptions.
  • Recommending improvement of work methods, organizational features, and the restructuring of positions to support the Endocrine services and quality patient care.
  • Report to leadership of the Medicine Service Line (MSL), and providing clinical care and planning in an interdisciplinary approach in collaboration with the Chief and Assistant Chief of MSL, and other health care professionals.
  • Must maintain current (BLS) Basic Life Support at all times.
  • Completing Focused and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations for providers.
  • Completing required proficiencies in a timely manner.
  • Monitoring and observing Endocrine provider activities such as encounter completion, progress note completion, consult utilization patterns, eRouter completion, clinical reminder completion, procedure performance and complications, etc.
  • Ensuring accurate documentation and coding of service rendered by the providers.
  • Assigning collaborating physicians and monitors mid-level providers as needed.

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Minimum 5 years of Endocrine clinical experience; eligible for faculty appointment at the primary academic affiliate; previous leadership experience; active research program.

Education and length of practice will be considered through a formal pay-setting process in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).
