Carle Illinois College of Medicine

Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Carle Health System

Carle Illinois College of Medicine (Carle Illinois), the nation’s first engineering-based college of medicine, seeks an exceptional, experienced leader to serve as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (Associate Dean).

Reporting to the Dean and as a member of their executive leadership team, the Associate Dean will provide overall administrative leadership for and oversee the implementation of a highly innovative medical education curriculum. Currently provisionally accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), Carle Illinois will undergo its full accreditation visit in fall, 2022. The Associate Dean will be critical to the success of the accreditation process and will continue the outstanding work already underway in delivering a case-driven, problem-based, active-learning curriculum. The Associate Dean will work closely with faculty and students to assess student progress and success, incorporate their feedback into the curriculum as it evolves, promote faculty effectiveness in the academic mission, and ensure compliance with LCME standards.

This is a rare opportunity to join an enthusiastically engaged, multi-disciplinary team of scholars, health care professionals, and medical education specialists in a groundbreaking, young college of medicine at the intersection of engineering, biological, and clinical sciences. The Associate Dean will identify and implement innovations that further integrate engineering concepts into programs and serve as a critical bridge to faculty engaged in the pre-clinical and clinical training.

The successful candidate will bring administrative leadership experience in an undergraduate medical education program at an accredited medical school, or equivalent academic leadership experience. In part, success in this role depends on engaging a wide range of constituents, stakeholders, and partners involved in bridging public and private organizations and missions, as well as exhibiting a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and being part of an executive leadership team that helps to foster a culture of philanthropy. Therefore, the successful candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, and oral and written communication skills and will be a strong consensus builder who fosters transparency. This individual must be collaborative by nature, passionate about curricular innovation, and committed to the goals of Carle Illinois.

Inquiries, nominations, and applications are invited. The university strongly encourages nominations of, as well as applications from, women and individuals traditionally underrepresented in academia and leadership. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled; however, for full consideration, applications, including a cover letter with vision statement, a one-page diversity statement, and a curriculum vitae should be received by December 13, 2021. All inquiries, nominations/referrals, and applications should be sent electronically to:
