Dean, School of Medicine and Vice President, Medical Affairs
The University of Maryland School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean, School of Medicine and Vice President, Medical Affairs.
Now in its third century, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) was chartered in 1807 as the first public medical school in the United States. From the beginning, the School was part of the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), the founding campus of the University System of Maryland. UMSOM has 43 academic departments, centers, institutes, and programs; and a faculty of more than 3,000 physicians, scientists, and allied health professionals, including members of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, and a distinguished recipient of the Albert E. Lasker Award in Medical Research.
The UMSOM has demonstrated extraordinary growth and national recognition. Over the past five years research funding has grown 50% with distinguished programs in cancer, infectious diseases, vaccines, genomics, and health disparities. It is ranked No. 7 among public medical schools and No. 22 among all schools (up from No. 42) in total grant and contract expenditures. It has been awarded 130 patents in this period and 33 startup companies have been formed. The School has successfully implemented a complete revision of its curriculum. The diversity of the faculty and students has grown as a result of the school’s intentional efforts, and its engagement with the community is substantial and reflects a longstanding culture of commitment that is perhaps unique among U.S. medical schools. The UMSOM strategic plan provides a clear sense of direction, academically, clinically, and culturally. Importantly, this plan and that for UMB also speaks to their commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and community engagement.
The next Dean will be a nationally recognized scholar and leader in academic medicine, one who is passionate about the mission, vision, and values of the School and is prepared to manage the cultural, strategic, and operational changes necessary to continue its success. The Dean will have a track record of collaborative partnership across organizational boundaries, demonstrate the learning agility that is characteristic of great leaders, and exhibit the cultural intelligence to effectively engage all those that contribute to the School’s success while focusing their efforts to benefit the School, the community, and society. The Dean will seek consensus among diverse stakeholders and will be a courageous leader who can bring confidence to a broad audience, during challenging times. The Dean will report to the President of UMB, sit on the President’s cabinet, and serve as the Vice President of Medical Affairs for the campus. They will be an active participant within the UMB leadership group, working to support the success of both organizations.
The School of Medicine has embarked on a number of enterprise-wide initiatives with far reaching consequences and seeks a Dean who will relish accepting the mantle of leadership in this special moment. Continuing the growth of discovery and innovation will be a critical focus of the Dean, identifying areas of new opportunity, recruiting new leadership when appropriate, and identifying both needs and new sources of support. Concurrently, the Dean will work closely with the new Physician Executive of the practice plan and the leadership of both the University of Maryland Medical Center and Medical System to advance the goals of creating a Shared Academic Health Enterprise. At each step of these important endeavors, the Dean will communicate with, engage, and inspire faculty, chairs, and staff, building confidence that in the midst of change, there is stability and a better, stronger future.
