Emory University Department of Anesthesiology is seeking an individual with experience creating an inclusive and dynamic learning environment to serve as the Vice Chair for Education (VCE).

The primary responsibility of the VCE is to oversee a multi-faceted educational program for the Department. Undergraduate medical education (UME), graduate medical education (GME) at the intern, residency and fellowship levels, continuing medical education (CME), and the training of allied health students (AA Master’s Program) fall under the purview of the Vice Chair for Education at Emory.

The Department of Anesthesiology supports an ACGME categorical residency program and five subspecialty fellowship training programs in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, Obstetric Anesthesia, Pain Medicine and Pediatric Anesthesiology. Additionally, the department has an Allied Health Master’s Degree Program for Anesthesiology Assistants, several non-ACGME fellowships. The Department also partners with the School of Nursing to help train CRNAs.

Position Specifics:

The VCE will have significant leadership responsibility to oversee all Anesthesiology education programs at multiple Emory-owned and Emory-affiliated hospitals and surgicenters. The VCE will collaborate with our residency program directors and associate program directors, fellowship program directors, and clerkship directors. The VCE will also work synergistically with other Vice Chairs (Faculty Development, Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Clinical Affairs, Quality, Research, and Community Practice). The VCE will also play an active role in clinical practice and participate in scholarly activities.

The VCE will coordinate the varied teaching activities of the Department, including:

  • Assisting the Department Chair in fostering an environment that values and promotes learning
  • Advising the Chair on education priorities, as well as recruitment, infrastructure, and funding needs
  • Working with the Department of Anesthesiology Chair as well as department and institutional finance teams to generate and adhere to operating budgets for all educational programs
  • Interacting with Emory University and its School of Medicine, Emory University’s Graduate Medical Education team to promote education initiatives
  • Developing tools for improvement of the department’s education programs as well as for reporting trainee and faculty performance
  • Ensuring that all department educational programs meet or exceed the expectations the Emory’s GME office as well as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME)
  • Ensuring that Emory anesthesiology residents and fellows are well-prepared for American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and all subspecialty training exams, and National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) examinations
  • Participating in and facilitating the recruitment of clinician educators
  • Orienting new faculty members to roles and responsibilities in education and teaching
  • Mentoring faculty who have a specific interest in medical education and/or who are career educators
  • Monitoring and evaluating the educational contributions of individual faculty members, encouraging all faculty members to maintain an ongoing portfolio of education contributions (e.g., teaching portfolio) for promotion and tenure purposes
  • Overseeing faculty-development activities related to education, including training faculty members how to teach effectively, how to effectively evaluate trainees, and how to give appropriate and meaningful feedback

Candidate Qualifications:

  • M.D., D.O., or foreign equivalent
  • Eligible to apply for a medical license in the state of Georgia
  • American Board of Anesthesiology board certified
  • Initial academic rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor) will be based on prior experience and a detailed review of the applicant’s curriculum vitae
  • Prior Program Director or Administrative experience preferred

Compensation & Role Support:

  • Compensation commensurate with FTE and academic rank
  • Administrative time provided to achieve parity with other Vice Chair positions within the Department of Anesthesiology and throughout the School of Medicine. A reassessment of effort needs will occur each year
  • Administrative support to facilitate the needs of the education program and to achieve parity with other Vice Chairs within the Department of Anesthesiology
