Director, Division of Health Policy and Insurance

Research Associate Professor or Professor

Department of Population Medicine

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute

The Department of Population Medicine (DPM) at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute (www.populationmedicine.org) seeks a mid-career to senior faculty member to direct its Division of Health Policy and Insurance Research (HPI), with a proposed academic appointment as Associate Professor or Full Professor of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School commensurate with qualifications.

This faculty member will initiate and participate in collaborative research focused on health policy with departmental faculty and investigators at other organizations. HPI, composed of approximately 40 members (~12 faculty as well as fellows, research scientists, and staff), produces rigorous evidence and builds research capacity to inform policies and system innovations that improve health outcomes, especially among vulnerable populations. The Division’s current areas of active investigation include: effects of high-cost medical care, pharmaceutical policies, health insurance innovations, delivery system changes, precision medicine, opioid policy, physician workforce distribution, behavioral interventions, and cost-quality trade-offs. Approximately 10% of the member’s time will be focused on administrative efforts. Substantial resources have been allocated for this position, including the possibility of an endowed chair at the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. Candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine are especially encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications:

  • Doctorate in an appropriate field (medicine, health policy, epidemiology, economics, or others)
  • A record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications, especially in the areas of health insurance or health equity
  • Demonstrated capacity for program development, and leadership in research and teaching
  • Ability to lead and work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • An established record of funded grant proposals from NIH, PCORI, or similar extramural funders
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

Responsibilities of the HPI Division director position include:

  • Serve as the primary representative of the Division to Departmental Leadership, which includes the Chair, Executive Director, and Executive Committee
  • Serve as a primary or secondary mentor for the Division’s faculty
  • Supervise the division’s staff in the day to day financial and operational governance of all activities based within the Division
  • Convene regular meetings of the Division (faculty and staff)
  • Lead the Division’s strategic plan, including size and composition of faculty, research scientists and fellows based in the Division
  • Ensure the Division’s financial well-being, including financial and budget management and planning

Besides their principal administrative and research activities, the faculty member will also spend a portion of time participating in the broader missions of the department and medical school including:

  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, graduate students, and/or research fellows
  • Establish and maintain collegial and productive contacts with other researchers and educators in the university and within existing research partnerships
  • Contribute to departmental administration as a member of committees

HPI is one of 5 divisions within DPM, a research and teaching partnership between Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Harvard Medical School. As the nation's first medical school appointing department based in a health plan, we are strategically positioned to improve population health and health care delivery locally, nationally, and internationally. The department is multi-disciplinary with a research and teaching portfolio spanning a range of clinical, educational, and health service areas. The DPM is home to rich data resources and has numerous strong local and national connections that amplify the opportunities for, and impact of, its research. It has longstanding collaborative relationships with multiple healthcare systems, including Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Tufts Health Plan, and the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) among others, and it participates in national collaborative research networks, including the Health Care Systems Research Network (HCSRN). DPM currently leads a consortium of 28 institutions in the FDA-funded Sentinel Initiative.

Clinicians may include part-time practice in their activities. Joint appointment in a second Harvard Medical School department or another Harvard faculty such as the T.H. Chan School of Public Health may be appropriate.

Candidates should send their CV, cover letter, and a statement of research interests to:
