Founding Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director

University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) - Galveston, Texas

UTMB was established in 1891 as the first academic health center in Texas and is a component of the University of Texas System. Today UTMB includes four schools (medicine, nursing, health professions and graduate biomedical sciences), a network of hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical care, and numerous research facilities. UTMB in Galveston is a Level 1 Trauma/Burn Center that has been rated as one of the top-performing major teaching hospitals in the country. 

Founding Residency Program Director - The University of Texas Medical Branch has an immediate opportunity for a Founding Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director to lead the establishment of our brand new GME program!  Our Founding Residency Program Director will have the unique opportunity to help establish, build, and lead our program from the ground-up. The position will include leadership, administrative, teaching, and patient care responsibilities consisting of:

  • Successful oversight of the ACGME certification process and ensuring the ongoing maintenance of certification and compliance with ACGME requirements.
  • All aspects of program development and growth.
  • Development of high-quality educational curriculum and experiential rotations per ACGME requirements.
  • Leading the interview, selection and ongoing mentoring and development of faculty physicians and staff.
  • Leading the interview, selection and on-going monitoring and evaluation of residents.
  • Ensuring effective program partnerships with hospital, clinics, and staff.
  • Facilitate faculty and resident participation in scholarly activities.
  • Maintain ongoing clinical duties.

The ideal candidate will also oversee the development, application, and the maintenance of certification of the program in compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements and the Policies and Procedures of the Sponsoring Institution.  Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Clinical Teaching, Supervision, Evaluation and Mentoring of Residents.
  • General Administration.
  • GME Committees/Meetings.
  • GME Lecturing/Teaching Conferences.
  • GME Recruiting/Interviewing.
  • GME Research/Scholarly Activity.
  • Program Evaluation. 

Candidate Requirements:

  • M.D. or D.O. degree and Board Certification is required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in administrative, educational and/or clinical services in an ACGME accredited residency program.
  • Ideally, candidates should have experience as a Core Faculty, Associate Director or Director of an EM Residency Training Program.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in teaching in a residency program is preferred.
  • Operational management, including budget preparation, experience in administrative support of a department, and demonstrated ability to manage detailed projects.
  • History of scholarly activities and research.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • A creative thinker with a demonstrated passion for teaching and learning.
  • Ability to combine Administrative and Diagnostic (teaching) Responsibilities.

Candidates with recent scholarly activity such as peer reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication/presentation of case reports, clinical series at scientific society meetings, or participation in national committees/educational organizations are highly encouraged to apply. Prior recipients of faculty teaching awards is preferred.
