The College of Medicine – Tucson (COM-T) invites applications from academic family and community physicians for the position of Chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine. Reporting directly to Dean Michael M.I. Abecassis, the chair will work collaboratively with the leaders of COM-T and Banner University Medicine to lead the department’s tripartite mission of achieving excellence in clinical, educational, individual, and team-based research programs to position the department for continued growth through innovation.

Position Description

The chair provides strategic and tactical leadership for all aspects of the department by supporting the continuum of family medicine services and programs encompassing prevention and treatment. The chair will optimize use of and manage existing resources and will foster a culture of philanthropic development. This visionary and collaborative leader will grow programs by leveraging departmental strengths, recruiting, and retaining talented faculty to expand the UArizona/Banner Health footprint including corresponding services at Banner University Medicine’s Tucson facilities, and by fostering relationships and partnerships with community stakeholders as well as with departments, colleges, and centers across the UArizona. Thus, the chair will be responsible and accountable for clinical growth, research advancement, teaching excellence, and enhancement of the department’s national reputation.

The next Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine will provide strategic leadership and direction for the growth of the department’s academic tripartite mission. Expansion of the academic enterprise will be anchored by both growth in the clinical activities of the academic medical center and successful competition for extramural research funding. The chair will grow these programs within the larger context of an expanding regional health care system. The chair will evaluate and leverage departmental strengths to expand the UArizona/Banner Health footprint, fostering a relational culture with community providers, and will work to recruit and retain talented faculty.

With 59 core faculty, the Department of Family and Community Medicine is a comprehensive academic clinical department with a remarkable number of established community partnerships in a wide variety of areas. This position will be pivotal in fulfilling the department’s priority to expand through innovative partnerships with community agencies, health-related organizations, and governmental entities. Building on an established UA College of Medicine – Tucson academic partnership with Banner Health, the fourth largest non-profit healthcare system in the U.S., the department is well-positioned to expand its range of clinical services. The department graduates sixteen family medicine residents per year. The department also offers an ACGME Sports Medicine Fellowship and a self-funded Integrative Medicine Fellowship. Faculty provide clinical services and mentor trainees at the Banner – University Medical Center-Tucson, Banner – University Medical Center-South, Banner – University Medical Center-North and the Alvernon and South Campus outpatient clinics.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding clinical and academic leader with an established track record of leadership and program building, who is recognized and well-respected by local, regional, and national peers, with strengths and accomplishments as a clinician, physician-scientist, and/or physician-educator. The chair will set a clear vision, inspire faculty, mentor trainees, and drive results. They will have a passion for developing unique models of care delivery and prevention initiatives, building relationships with community-based providers, and possess a desire to build systems and processes to maximize efficiency. The chair will engage faculty, mentor their careers, hold them accountable to agreed-upon objectives, and create a collaborative environment conducive to camaraderie, excellent clinical care, research, education, and service. Qualified candidates must hold an MD, DO, MD/PhD or equivalent medical degree; be board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, eligible for medical licensure in Arizona, and preferably meet UArizona criteria for appointment to a tenured / tenure-eligible senior level faculty position.

Banner University Medicine

In 2015, Banner Health merged with the University of Arizona Health Network to form Banner University Medicine. At the heart of this merger is academic medicine - research, teaching and patient care - across three academic medical centers in Tucson and Phoenix.  Banner University Medicine's presence in Tucson includes the Banner - University Medical Center Tucson, Banner - University Medical Center South and the Diamond Children's Medical Center, and dozens of physician offices and clinics across Southern Arizona.  Banner - University Medical Center Tucson opened a tower in 2019 featuring 228 new private rooms, for a total of 649, and 20 new operating rooms. The hospital is located near the campus of the University of Arizona and is adjacent to the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
