Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (LHMC), part of Beth Israel Lahey Health, is seeking a Chair to lead its Department of Anesthesia. Candidates should have excellent management and interpersonal skills that will allow them to lead, grow and develop a department of highly trained physicians, nurse anesthetists, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, supported by other administrative and clinical personnel in providing exceptional care to a variety of adult patients in a quaternary care Academic Medical Center. The Chair, reporting to Hospital-based Specialties, will lead the clinical, administrative, and educational priorities for the Department in partnership with hospital leadership.

The Department of Anesthesiology is composed of 58 Physicians, 25 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, 24 Residents, 2 Fellows, 13 APNs and PAs, 13 RNs, and a complement of technicians, medical assistants, schedulers, and administrative support staff. There are also additional support roles in quality and safety, clinical operations, and medical coding. The Department provides anesthesia care for patients at all anesthetizing locations of Lahey Hospital and Medical Center and Lahey Medical Center Peabody. These include, but are not exclusive of, Endoscopy, Interventional Radiology, Interventional Neuroradiology, Electrophysiology Lab, and Cardiac Cath Lab.  In addition, the Department provides Interventional Pain Management services. The Department performs approximately 25k cases per year. It serves the hospital and its patients as a unified group of highly skilled professionals providing state-of-the-art clinical care to operative and procedural sites in collaboration with many surgical and medical specialties across LHMC with integral programs including a Stroke Center, Solid Abdominal Organ Transplant Center, Level 1 Trauma Center, Acute Pain Service (APS), CTICU, SICU, and perioperative center.


The Department has a strong commitment to education.  Our Anesthesia Residency program, in association with the Tufts University School of Medicine, has 24 residents and 2 Fellows. The Department also serves as a clinical rotation site for the Boston College Nurse Anesthetist Program, instructs medical students from TUSM, and trains Boston MedFlight personnel in airway management. Department members participate in daily lectures for residents and SRNAs, weekly journal club meetings, M+M reviews, and Simulation Lab training. Faculty are also actively involved in professional clinical development for advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, anesthesia technicians, and visiting pulmonary Fellows. This position has specific duties that impact the organization, including working with staff from across the system on diversity related planning and responsibilities that are specific to the development and implementation of the BILH's ongoing diversity initiatives and programs.

The responsibilities of the Chair include the direction and administration of the professional, operational, education and research programs of the Department.  The Chair is responsible for provider recruitment and professional development, achievement of divisional quality, financial, and patient satisfaction goals, development of new strategic initiatives, effective management of resource allocation within the division, and optimization of divisional operations.  Candidates should have an established record of achievement in anesthesia.  Candidates should be prepared to lead the multidisciplinary team, with a track record of building coalitions and partnerships to ensure the delivery of excellent clinical care and advancing the academic mission of LHMC.

Applicants must be board certified in Anesthesia. Successful candidates will have significant professional experience in clinical practice and leadership, including significant operative and procedural operational expertise. A strong academic background and interest in advancing academic initiatives is desirable. Faculty appointment, commensurate with experience, is available through the affiliation with Tufts University School of Medicine.

The Lahey Health integrated delivery system consists of over 1,200 clinicians providing care throughout Lahey Health’s network of acute care hospitals, ambulatory centers, physician practice sites, behavioral health facilities, long-term care facilities, home health organizations and care management programs.  In March 2019, Lahey Health merged with four other local hospital organizations (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, New England Baptist, Mount Auburn, and Anna Jaques Hospitals) to form Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH).  BILH currently employs 35,000 individuals making it the second largest employer in the state of Massachusetts and consists of over 200 care locations including 13 hospitals with over 2400 beds and 5 ambulatory surgery centers.  Approximately 4,300 physicians are associated with BILH including 840 primary care physicians managing 1.3 million patients.
