The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM) of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) is seeking the following orthopaedic surgeons with a strong interest in an academic career:

  • Orthopaedic Trauma
  • Orthopaedic Adult Reconstruction

The candidate should enjoy teaching residents and medical students as well as pursuing research and other scholarly activities within the Department. The position is a full-time appointment at TTUHSC El Paso and the salary is competitive.

The Department’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program is unique in that it is a combined military-civilian program between William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) and TTUHSC El Paso. The program is one of the largest in the Department of Defense. Orthopaedic residents rotate at WBAMC, University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC-EP) and El Paso Children’s Hospital.

TTUHSC El Paso is one of four independent universities in the Texas Tech University System.  The Health Sciences Center consists of the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, and the emerging Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine.

UMC-EP is El Paso’s only nonprofit community-owned hospital and healthcare system and a regional referral center for patients in need of specialty care.  It is the only El Paso hospital ever to be named one of America’s Top 100 hospitals, having earned the distinction three times, and is the only American College of Surgeon’s Level I Trauma Center within 270 miles of El Paso. UMC-EP serves as the primary teaching hospital for residents and medical students of TTUHSC El Paso.

El Paso is the 6th most populous city in Texas and the 21st in the United States. The Franklin Mountains are the signature of Texas’ only “mountain city.” At 24,000 acres, El Paso’s Franklin Mountains State Park is the largest urban park in the country. It’s a unique resource – an outpost of wild Chihuahuan Desert, in the midst of a major city. In 2018, El Paso was ranked as the city with the lowest cost of living by Forbes magazine and the second safest city in the U.S.  Exceptional public schools and private schools are available. The city has minor league baseball and soccer, symphony, museums, excellent dining options and shopping. The El Paso International Airport is easy to access, making travel simple and efficient. One can enjoy living in the mountains and skiing is just two hours away. El Paso was honored as a 2018 All-America City by the National Civic League.

The successful candidate will be employed by TTUHSC El Paso at an academic rank of assistant professor or higher, commensurate with qualifications. The position requires a M.D. /D.O. degree, successful completion of an ACGME accredited residency program in orthopaedic surgery (Trauma and Adult Reconstructive), and successful completion of an ACGME-accredited fellowship program (Trauma only). Qualified applicants must have or be eligible for an unrestricted Texas license. Board certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery is preferred. Regional or emerging national reputation is necessary to be considered for associate professor level or higher.  Interested applicants must apply online at http://careers.texastech.edu  and forward their curriculum vitae to:
