The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking an outstanding leader to serve as Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, within the Department of Pediatrics. The Division Director is responsible for the comprehensive leadership and management of the Division’s activities and for advancing UAB’s and Children’s of Alabama’s excellence in clinical care, research, advocacy, and education.

This leader will build on the significant departmental and institutional strengths, commitment to clinical excellence, research innovation, and superb education in a culture of patient and family centered care. Faculty members in the Division have diverse and complementary areas of interest and expertise including Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders, Nutrition, Weight Management, Intestinal Rehabilitation, Pancreatitis, Aerodigestive Disorders, Feeding Problems, and Liver Transplantation. Opportunities for the new division director include expansion of current subspecialty focus areas, development of robust research programs and continued mentorship of the faculty to achieve national prominence. The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology has 14 faculty and 6 fellows.

The Department of Pediatrics has a rich history of service and scholarship. The Department encompasses 19 divisions and includes 260 highly skilled clinicians and investigators. Our goals in the Department are to provide the highest quality medical care to children and adolescents; to develop new preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for diseases that impact our patients through basic, translational and health services research; and to provide outstanding education across the continuum of pediatric medicine. Over the past 7 years, research activity has continued to increase; extramural grant awards provided $31 million in total committed annual dollars (including over $21.5 million from NIH) in FY20. The Department is deeply committed to the education of the next generation of outstanding pediatricians through robust Residency and Fellowship programs (in FY21, 96 residents and 75 fellows). A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as caring for the underserved is essential. Faculty are engaged in strong advocacy efforts at the state and national level.

A strong history of academic achievement and a commitment to excellence in service, education, and academic productivity are required. The successful candidate will have a national reputation in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, reflecting a strong record of scholarly accomplishments and leadership ability, with a history of progressive leadership experience. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are necessary, and a record of interdisciplinary collaboration is desirable. The ideal candidate will qualify for an appointment at the Associate or Professor level within UAB and will be an MD, or MD/PhD who is licensed or eligible for license in the state of Alabama. Salary and tenure status are negotiable based on experience and current academic achievements.

The UAB Department of Pediatrics practices at Children’s of Alabama (COA), which is an independent children’s hospital. COA is the only medical center in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children.

Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama and has an important history in civil rights in the United States.
