Associate Professor / Professor at CUMC / Associate Dean/ Senior Associate Dean
Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) seeks applicants for the position of Associate or Senior Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs. The incumbent will also hold an appointment as a Columbia University faculty member at the level of Associate Professor or Professor. This position reports to the School’s Vice Dean for Education.
The Associate or Senior Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs is responsible for the overall development, implementation, and ongoing renewal of Columbia’s medical students’ educational program, their performance within the program (testing and assessment), program evaluation, staffing, and accreditation. The Associate or Senior Associate Dean provides leadership and guidance to faculty course and clerkship directors, and the staff of the Office of Curricular Affairs.
Job duties include:
- Provide oversight of the MD curriculum assuring compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and VP&S policies
- Assure achievement of VP&S objectives through evidence-based approaches to education and assessment
- Promote curricular innovation and education scholarship:
- Supervise and mentor junior and mid-level faculty in medical education
- Oversee the day-to-day activities of implementing the medical students educational program:
- Serve as the primary leader in overseeing curriculum, including the academic schedule, course and clerkship scheduling, and new initiatives
- Provide oversight for all course, clerkship, and elective directors
- Responsible for the maintenance and update of the UME policies and procedures
- Oversee continuous quality improvement process for courses and clerkships
- Ensure that the school’s curriculum meets or exceeds all accreditation requirements
- Advise the Vice Dean for Education and Associate Dean for Education Finance and Administration on resource needs for implementing and innovating the curriculum
- Supervise three faculty Director direct reports:
- Assistant Dean for Curricular Affairs
- Director of Curricular Innovations and Strategic Initiatives
- Director of Equity and Justice in Curricular Affairs
- Supervise the Director of the Office of Curricular Affairs
- Staff includes 7 FTE’s, reporting to the Director
- Collaborate with other key Education Leadership:
- With the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs, supporting student progress, success, and well being
- With the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs to support underrepresented students and to work toward an anti-racist curriculum, pedagogy, and clinical training
- With the Associate Dean for Education Finance and Administration to assure alignment of educational program and available resources
- Work closely with the Senior Associate Deans for Admissions, for Student Research, and the Director of the Center for Education Research and Evaluation (CERE)
- Partner with the Senior Associate Dean for Innovation in Health Professions Education on emerging needs for curricular innovation and educator faculty development
- Committees and regular meetings include:
- Weekly meetings with Vice Dean for Education, Education Advisory Group (medical education deans), direct staff and faculty reports
- Semiweekly meetings with medical education deans and directors
- Monthly meetings with the Committee on Education Policy and Curriculum
- Biweekly meetings with Student Curriculum Advisory Board
- Periodic meetings with curriculum subcommittee chairs and with curriculum subcommittees
- Periodic curricular CQI meetings
- Periodic meetings to review clerkship evaluations, mistreatment reports, bias reports
- MD or PhD degree and experience working with administration and faculty in an academic medical education program.
- A track record of scholarly engagement evident by presentations at professional meetings and peer-reviewed publications.
- The applicant must be eligible for appointment to the Columbia faculty at the level of an Associate Professor or Professor.
- Experience in the administration of graduate health professions education programs or past participation in teaching and evaluating medical students is required.
- The successful applicant should have excellent communication, collaboration, administrative and organizational skills.
