St. Joseph s Health offers a 12-month Adult Cardiac Surgery Fellowship with our Cardiovascular Institute open to one fellow each year. The Adult Cardiac Surgery Fellowship Program provides an advanced non-ACGME accredited training experience focusing on the necessary specialized surgical skills required for treating patients with cardiovascular system diseases. Prior to the fellowship, a candidate must have successfully completed a two-year cardiothoracic surgery residency accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Learning objectives include mastering surgical techniques for the entire spectrum of surgery for acquired cardiovascular disease including primary and re-operative operations for coronary atherosclerosis (coronary artery bypass grafting, on and off pump and minimally invasive including robotic-assist), mitral and aortic valve repair and replacement, and the treatment of pericardial disease; extensive use of arterial conduit; minimally invasive endoscopic techniques for conduit harvesting and revascularization and redo-sternotomies.

Fellows are expected to competently assess, based on available scientific evidence, the indications for surgery for patients with adult cardiovascular diseases. Fellows will develop full responsibility for surgical planning including appropriate invasive studies, preoperative assessment and conduct of the surgical procedure. The fellow will become acquainted with the preoperative evaluation of emergent and elective patients and gain expertise in the postoperative care and resuscitation of critically ill patients. The fellow should develop an in-depth knowledge of hemodynamic management and problem-solving ability in critical care. The fellow will become efficient in interpreting echocardiogram (ECHO), computed tomography (CT) and catheterization studies, and knowledgeable in the principles of management of coronary disease, valvular heart disease and diseases of the aorta.

Fellows will also be involved in the care of thoracic surgery patients, such as post lobectomy and post esophageal surgery patients. In addition to operative experience the fellow will attend outpatient clinic to evaluate new patients including their histories and physical and diagnostic data and will be involved in developing the plan for therapy. The fellowship will include exposure to structural heart procedures including TAVR and mechanical support experience (ECMO) as well as hybrid surgical-catheter ablations for atrial fibrillation. Fellows will also be responsible for the postoperative management in the cardiovascular intensive care unit as well as the less intensive postoperative patient care on the general cardiothoracic surgical unit.

The one-year fellowship position, beginning on July 1st each year, is available for individuals who have completed training in a US or Canadian ACGME accredited cardiothoracic residency program. Applicants must be Board eligible or Board certified. International medical school graduates will only be considered if they have completed their residency training in a US or Canadian ACGME accredited residency program. A valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate is required for all international medical graduates. A New York medical license is required on day one of appointment.
