Post Doctoral Position
This post-doctoral position is located within the Clinical Epidemiology Section, Critical Care Medicine Department (CCMD), Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health. The Clinical Epidemiology Section is seeking an outstanding post-doctoral clinical epidemiologist to lead and support big data research in a unique area on the overlap between infectious diseases, critical illness, with a focus on antibiotic resistance, sepsis as well as ongoing mission-critical, multi-agency, epidemiologic investigations on COVID-19.
The clinical epidemiology section in the CCMD at the NIH Clinical Center has a track record of conducting population-level research using large databases of electronic health record and administrative data that cannot be answered in traditional clinical trials. The section works collaboratively with investigators at other federal agencies such as the CDC and FDA and other branches within the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services on time sensitive investigations of national relevance. The section conducts investigations that tackle complex topics involving the clinical burden and impact relating to antibiotic resistance, sepsis and COVID-19 in U.S. hospitals as well as comparative effectiveness of existing therapies in the real-world setting.
The incumbent will have the opportunity to contribute to a fascinating research niche that has the potential to directly impact real-world clinical practice, prognostication and healthcare policy. The incumbent will work with a team of clinical epidemiologists, clinicians, microbiologists, pharmacists, informaticists, biostatisticians and public health and policy experts to tackle complex topics that require collective thinking and coordination. The incumbent will be involved in ongoing clinical and population-based research and have the opportunity to lead independent research projects.
- Ph.D. in epidemiology or a closely related field.
- Sound understanding of epidemiologic methods and principles
- Strong quantitative skills, including experience with a variety of multivariable analytic techniques
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages for analysis of large datasets of epidemiologic data (e.g., SAS, STATA, R, Python).
- Experience in the study of infectious diseases, microbiology and/or critical illness
- Experience in designing and executing original research in epidemiology
- Experience teaching epidemiologic concepts (although there is no teaching requirement)
