The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the non-tenure academic clinician track. Expertise is required in the specific area of Emergency Medicine. Applicants must have an M.D. or equivalent degree. ABEM certified.
Teaching responsibilities may include overseeing and supporting all educational programs of the University of Pennsylvania, the Perelman School of Medicine and the Department of Emergency Medicine. This shall include the education of medical students, house officers, faculty and other allied health professions trainees.
Clinical responsibilities may include providing emergency medical care to patients presented to the emergency department at Pennsylvania Hospital when needed.
The Chair will support the education programs of the Department, including Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality conferences and other such conferences that are open to both the housestaff and attending staff at Pennsylvania Hospital. The Chair will work with the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine to appoint site liaison to assure premier quality experience for rotating residents.
Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH) is part of Penn Medicine and is located at 8th and Spruce Streets in the historic Society Hill district of Philadelphia. PAH is a 475-bed acute care facility that provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical services and functions as a major teaching and clinical research institution. The hospital has over 24,000 inpatient admissions, including 5,400 births, and 350,000 outpatient visits each year.
The Department of Emergency Medicine manages more than 40,000 annual visits. This position reports jointly to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine for the Health System and to the Chief Executive Officer of PAH. The Chair will provide medical leadership for the PAH ED and is accountable for the quality of clinical services, patient experience, engagement and education of the faculty, staff and residents, and the overall integration of the PAH ED into overall emergency services at Penn Medicine.
The primary goal of the Pennsylvania Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine is to provide the highest level of clinical care in the region. As Chair, responsibilities will include contributing to and leading the Pennsylvania Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine toward this goal. In achieving these goals, the following guiding principles are expected: •The Pennsylvania Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine will collaborate with clinical colleagues and Pennsylvania Hospital Administration to develop a patient centered approach to clinical care •The Pennsylvania Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine is expected to operate at the productivity benchmarks for the department set by the health system and the Department (now at the 65th percentile of the UHC) •The Pennsylvania Hospital Emergency Department will continue to participate in the ongoing efforts to coordinate Emergency Medicine service across the Health System. •Pennsylvania Hospital will continue to participate as part of the Emergency Medicine Graduate Medical Education and medical student education programs. The specific configuration of residency and fellowship training at Pennsylvania Hospital will be based on the considerations of attracting high quality trainees and taking advantage of the unique training opportunities at PAH.
