Job Description
The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), a U.S. public land grant Historically Black University (HBCU), is seeking applications for the newly formed Medical School to fill the position of Founding Dean. This is a unique opportunity for a visionary, collaborative, innovative and results-oriented leader to join in the development of a high-quality medical education program that will rely heavily on the use of innovative teaching techniques, educational technology, and community care training that produces knowledgeable and caring physicians committed to helping the Virgin Islands and Caribbean communities.

The UVI School of Medicine is seeking accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), and aims to be the first U.S., LCME-accredited, English-speaking Caribbean Medical School. We are dedicated to educating the next generation of physicians committed to improving the health of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the broader Caribbean community. The goal is to accept the first class of 35 students in the Fall of 2023.

The Founding Dean will be responsible for providing leadership to a new medical school, hiring and evaluating administrators, teaching faculty and clinicians, securing additional philanthropic support, serving as an eloquent spokesperson for the importance of medical education in the Virgin Islands, Caribbean region and the nation. The Founding Dean should also embrace the importance of diversity in medical education and be a champion for the recruitment and development of more African American and African Caribbean physicians. The University of the Virgin Islands medical school will be the first HBCU medical school since 1975, and the first public HBCU medical school in the history of the United States.

Required Qualifications
An MD degree and credentials that would warrant appointment at the academic rank of Full Professor are required.

Preferred Qualifications
A candidate must have an exceptional track record of accomplishments and success as a clinician, physician-scientist, external research success, a superb educator in academic medicine. The new founding Dean will be known for promoting patient-centered and compassionate care and will ideally practice medicine. The candidate must also possess an exemplary track record of hiring, motivating, and mentoring department chairs, vice, associate, and assistant deans, and senior administrative staff. Having a proven record of success recruiting individuals from diverse backgrounds is essential and indispensable.
