Search for the Dean of the Keck School of Medicine

Los Angeles, California

The University of Southern California (USC), one of the world’s leading private research universities and the oldest private research university in the western United States, seeks its next Dean of the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM). A key member of USC’s new healthcare leadership team, the Dean will join a top-tier medical school with a legacy of educational innovation and community-focused healthcare at a time of great excitement, forward momentum, and change, as the University takes strides towards its ambitious goals to double the size of its research enterprise while scaling its health system.

Throughout its history, KSOM has been at the forefront of innovation in academic medicine, with a legacy of community service that continues to this day. KSOM holds academic affiliations with two Los Angeles-based hospitals: Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center (LAC+USC) and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). KSOM is home to 2,071 full-time faculty, including faculty at CHLA; 274 part-time faculty; 2,080 voluntary faculty physicians; 970 resident and fellow physicians at Keck and LAC+USC Medical Center, and an additional 260 residents and fellows at CHLA; 2,304 staff; and 2,482 students, including MD, PhD, MD/PhD, master’s, undergraduate, and certificate students. In addition to the MD program, whose innovative curriculum integrates clinical study with basic science and close work with faculty mentors, KSOM offers 30 graduate programs – MD/PhD, PhD, master’s, and certificates – in which students work on the world’s most pressing health and biomedical problems. The School also offers postdoctoral training programs, a number of professional degree programs, two undergraduate degree programs, and opportunities for continued medical education. U.S. News and World Report ranks KSOM 29th in research, and in the top 30 for the most diverse medical schools in the country.

USC is embarking on its next phase of growth and impact, and the Dean of KSOM will be an invaluable contributor in this endeavor. Over the last few years, important changes have occurred, and the current leadership team has a strong vision for USC’s future. The sense of excitement and energy at USC is palpable, and this energy extends to KSOM, where recent changes to the leadership structure, including the creation of a Health System Board and the appointment of Dr. Steven Shapiro as inaugural Senior Vice President for Health Affairs, has set the stage for significant advancements over the next decade.

The Dean will play a pivotal leadership role in KSOM’s tripartite mission of education, research, and clinical care, building upon a legacy of community healthcare based in a century-old affiliation with LA’s largest public hospital and driving a vision of innovation in medical and graduate education and training. With the pieces in place to drastically grow KSOM’s research and clinical functions over the next several years, and with a multi-billion-dollar healthcare campaign on the horizon, the Dean will capitalize on USC’s extraordinary strengths, entrepreneurial spirit, and unparalleled location in Los Angeles to continue to build KSOM into a preeminent school of medicine that supports publicly inspired medicine coupled with world-class science.

To achieve these goals, the Dean must be an established leader with great integrity and vision, possess and demonstrate the highest personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and have the ability to create a sense of shared purpose and community within KSOM. The Dean will be a first-rate scholar who can strategically articulate and align the School’s education, clinical, and research missions with those of the broader Keck Medicine and USC goals. The Dean will address a number of key opportunities and challenges:

  • Drive and execute an inclusive and strategic vision for KSOM within the new structure of USC’s growing healthcare enterprise;
  • Accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and translation by strengthening and further integrating clinical, basic, and population-based research;
  • Enhance and support the graduate and medical education and training experience;
  • Champion and advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion across all constituencies;
  • Lead recruitment of exceptional faculty and retention efforts for existing faculty;
  • Generate and align resources to support the ambitions of KSOM, particularly through philanthropic fundraising;
  • Promote a culture of transparency and collaboration through both systems and actions; and
  • Serve as a compelling and effective external ambassador for KSOM and USC at large.
