Founding Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Division of Gastroenterology

University of Massachusetts Medical School & UMass Memorial Health Care

Worcester, MA

The Department of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) and UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC) seeks a collaborative and dynamic physician leader to serve as the founding Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) for the Division of Gastroenterology. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a physician to develop and expand clinical programming at one of the nation's leading medical schools and academic medical centers.

Reporting directly to Christopher Marshall, MD, Interim Chief of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine, the founding Director of IBD will focus on coordinating the comprehensive care of patients with IBD, including consultative and therapeutic endoscopic care, as well as coordinating with the nutrition and social work departments. Together with the Division Chief and supported by the Department of Medicine and the Medical Center, the founding Director will create and develop an Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center focused on the provision of integrated IBD patient care with an emphasis on efficacy of treatment and patient experience. The Director will lead, in collaboration with the Division Chief, the hiring of physicians who specialize or have a clinical interest in IBD and will work to advance research and promote fellowship education in the field.

The Department of Medicine, under the new leadership of Dr. David McManus, is focused on leveraging academic opportunities, including well-regarded training programs, one of the top NIH-funded internal medicine research portfolios in the nation, and a patient mix that includes the most complex cases in Central Massachusetts, to build upon the prodigious successes already seen in the medical school. The Division of Gastroenterology is a key component in growing the clinical and academic footprint of the Department, and the founding Director of IBD will have the opportunity to continue the positive forward momentum to lead cutting-edge patient care and research in IBD.

The Director of IBD will be committed to providing superior patient care and strive to improve systems and processes to reach UMMS and UMMHC goals. Candidates must hold a medical doctorate degree, board certification in Gastroenterology, and possess qualifications for appointment to associate professor or full professor at the UMMS.
