The University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine is seeking an inspirational leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Surgery.  

The new Chair is expected to be a nationally respected academic leader, an active clinically practicing surgeon, and an individual who leads with transparency and by example.

The USF Health Morsani College of Medicine Department of Surgery serves the Tampa Bay area, which has a diverse multicultural population exceeding 4 million people. Since its inception as part of the USF College of Medicine in 1971, the Department has been committed to quality clinical care, teaching medical students, a strong residency program, and clinical and translational research.  The faculty serve a number of sites, with a primary focus on Tampa General Hospital (TGH), the Moffitt Cancer Center, the James A. Haley Veterans’ Administration Hospital and the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System are additional sites for medical student education, resident training and academic collaboration. 

The prospects for growth in faculty and academic programs for the Department have never been more promising.  Over the past decade, TGH has evolved into a nationally prominent quaternary care facility offering a full range of subspecialty services, many ranked top in the State of Florida on the U.S. News & World Report Survey. USF faculty have thrived there and provide a majority of admissions, surgeries and other services alongside Tampa General Medical Group and community physicians. The partnership between USF Health and TGH is now entering a new phase of clinical integration with the signing of a new Joint Operating Agreement that fully aligns clinical services, education, and research.  The USF Health Morsani College of Medicine transitioned in January 2020 to a new downtown location in the exciting Water Street District of Tampa in proximity to TGH and our world class Center for Advanced Medical Leaning and Simulation (CAMLS). The new Medical School building is a 400,000 SF facility that houses state-of-the-art educational, research and clinical facilities.  It is the centerpiece of a 50 acre $3B private/public development project that will render Tampa into one of the most attractive urban areas in the U.S.

The new Chair will be an entrepreneurial, strong leader and recognized scholar in the field, deeply committed to the academic mission of the Department, as well as relishing the entrepreneurial challenge of succeeding in the clinical environment of large scale value-based health care delivery.  She/he will exhibit the qualities required to be a successful leader in a complex, matrixed environment, including the ability to work collaboratively across the various hospital organizational units and clinical service lines, and effectively promote the Department with community providers and leaders, donors, and other pertinent external entities. The Chair is expected to serve a key leadership role within the Health Morsani College of Medicine, and a strong collaborative partner with TGH.

The Chair must share and demonstrate passion for the institutional commitment to its mission of clinical excellence, education, and research, including inter-professional team building. She/he must have the business acumen and cultural sensitivity to manage a complex organization and demonstrate the interpersonal skills that will assure successful relationship building with a variety of external and internal stakeholders, including government figures, donors, and affiliated organizations. The Chair must bring vision to the task of drafting the Department’s future, coupled with an ability to communicate in a fashion that inspires others to follow in challenging health care environment. She/he must be a consensus builder, but also capable of serving as an agent for change. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An M.D. or M.D. /Ph.D. from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Normally will have produced creative work, professional writing or research in refereed and other professional journals, and be a recognized authority in the field of specialization. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Professor.
  • Must have progressive experience in a complex academic medical center with demonstration working relationship with hospital partner.
  • National, and preferably international, recognition in surgery as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national or international level and/or scholarly activities.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
  • Possession of, or eligibility for, an unrestricted medical license in the State of Florida.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Would have a proven track record of academic leadership at least at the Divisional Directors level and experience with working directly with hospital partners, executives (including Vice Chairs), and administrators.
  • Have demonstrated abilities to collaborate with core programs such as anesthesiology, pathology and radiology that are integrate to a successful academic and clinical mission and vision in surgical and nonsurgical care.
  • Have demonstrated abilities in alignment of academic surgical programs with hospital partners and the community.
