Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

National Jewish Health (NJH) is committed to building and sustaining a diverse and inclusive work environment and community.  Its Associate Vice President (AVP) of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will be a passionate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) champion, and provide thoughtful leadership and guidance to imbed the principles of DEl in the everyday work of faculty and staff.  The AVP will serve as a leader and an institutional resource in areas of cultural diversity, structural racism, gender equality and justice, disability, sexual orientation, ethnic and religious tolerance, and gender identity and expression.

Minimum Qualifications

• MD, DO or PhD and credentials to qualify for appointment to the faculty in partnership with a clinical or research position. Time commitment is negotiable, and is expected to be up to 30% effort.

• Five or more years of progressive leadership and administrative experience leading DEI initiatives and programming designed to build cultural competence on issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual identity and religion.

• Experience utilizing institutional data to benchmark and promote accountability for the diversity mission.

• Evidence of outstanding verbal, written, and analytical skills.

• Demonstrated knowledge, skills, awareness of and commitment to contemporary issues of inclusion, social justice, diversity, access, and equity, including the current research and pedagogical approaches that inform and address these issues.

• Highly self-motivated, exceptional time and project management skills, high level of productivity, critical thinking, and creativity.

• Demonstrated emotional intelligence and strong communication skills to present complex and emotionally charged material in understandable and usable ways.

• Strong and effective presentation and diversity training skills with the ability to prepare, organize and present education programs to individuals and groups.

• Strong skills in and working knowledge of problem-solving and mediation techniques.

• Exceptional communication skills, cultural awareness and sensitivity to interact, collaborate, establish rapport and maintain productive working relationships within a complex organization.

• Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in the development, implementation and evaluation of education programs and initiatives which address the needs of diverse populations.

• Ability to communicate to a wide audience the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion.

• Ability to work independently and to work effectively as leader or member in teams, on taskforces, and committees.

• Ability to provide coaching and consultation to individuals and groups with respect to cultural challenges and conflicts.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion; inspire confidence, maintain credibility and positively represent NJH.

• Ability to recommend appropriate interventions, make referrals and provide information regarding related policies and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Primary responsibility for providing institution-wide leadership for the Institution’s commitment to enhancing and sustaining a diverse workplace, promoting a culture of inclusiveness, advancing cultural competence, and developing strategic initiatives that contribute to the success of all faculty and staff and to the delivery of care to the diverse population served by NJH. 

•Promote DEI principles in recruitment, and through diversity education and program development.

•Partner with institutional leadership and community leaders to facilitate development and achievement of the goals in the NJH DEI Strategic Plan.

•Be a member of the Institution’s senior management team and provide regular updates on DEI activities.

•Build relationships with external partners (e.g., universities, associations, advocacy groups) to research and implement effective diversity and inclusion initiatives.

•Work with the Marketing and Communications team, contribute to building NJH’s employment branding strategy, and represent the organization internally and externally, telling our story and sharing our commitments, programs, lessons learned and progress.
