The U.S. Department of State is now hiring physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and psychiatrists to fill critical vacancies around the globe. The Department’s Bureau of Medical Services (MED) operates in more than 270 embassies and consulates worldwide and relies on skilled clinicians like you to carry out its mission.

As a medical provider, you will treat American diplomats and their families in overseas posts, often in medically austere locations. You will be challenged daily, and your flexibility and resourcefulness as a provider will be critical to your success. You will also get unmatched opportunities to provide hands-on, personalized care to patients, spending most of your working time in clinical settings.

Prior family practice experience is vital to this role, and rural or solo practice experience is also useful. In some cases, emergency medical experience can be beneficial, though it’s not required.

The U.S. Department of State provides a 10 percent recruitment and retention bonus for all Medical Specialist positions. The recruitment bonus is given at the time of hire and after one year of service all Medical Specialists are eligible for the annual 10 percent retention incentive.
