Chair Division of Surgical Intensive Care Unit

Lahey Hospital and Medical Center is seeking an experienced critical care physician to lead its Division of Surgical Intensive Care and 24-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), currently staffed by a combination of critical-care boarded anesthesiologists and general surgeons. Candidates should have excellent clinical, management, and interpersonal skills that will allow them to lead a division of highly skilled clinicians that includes Residents, Fellows and Advanced Practitioners.   The Chair should be capable of providing leadership to the organization regarding the needs of critically ill patients and the administration of surgical critical care units.

Candidates should have critical care board certification and extensive surgical critical care experience.

Clinical Specialities can include Liver and Kidney Transplant, Cardiothoracic, Colorectal, Vascular, among others. 

This leader is responsible for the clinical direction of the Surgical ICU in collaboration with hospital nursing leadership, participation in clinical coverage of the Surgical ICU service, participation in fellow, resident and mid-level provider education, and lead multidisciplinary critical care rounds.  Depending on their specialty, the candidate could in addition participate in clinical coverage of the trauma-acute care surgery service, anesthesia service or emergency medicine service in addition to clinical coverage of the SICU.

Responsibilities also include compliance with, and promotion of safe, high quality service in order to meet or exceed standards for appropriate accreditation and verification of clinical programs by regulatory, accreditation or verification agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree from an accredited school of medicine
  • Board certification in Critical Care Medicine 
  • Eligible to obtain a license to practice in Massachusetts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Clinical expertise in the full spectrum of critically ill surgical patients
  • Previous experience as Medical Director of a Surgical Critical Care unit

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly as an integral member of a team and as a leader
  • Proficiency in educational efforts
  • Experience with point of care ultrasound
