Designated Institutional Official and
Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education

School of Medicine, University of Missouri

The University of Missouri (MU) School of Medicine (SOM) and MU Health Care (MUHC) seek an experienced, skilled and accomplished physician leader to serve as the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (ADGME) and Designated Institutional Official (DIO). This combined position (ADGME and DIO) will oversee all the training programs for clinical residents and fellows across the MUHC and the SOM, ensure compliance with all national accreditation standards and SOM expectations and provide leadership to a dedicated network of professionals committed to ensuring the best possible training and educational outcomes achievable.

This is a unique opportunity to lead long-standing successful Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs within a healthy academic health system. The academic health enterprise encompasses successful education, research, and clinical/patient care delivery programs. Even in the midst of global challenges related to the pandemic, the MU School of Medicine, MU Health Care and the University at large find itself in an era of investment, strategic growth, and catalyzing research efforts to elevate its preeminence among its peers in the academic medical center community.

The Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education is accountable for identifying and operationalizing strategies which will ensure the ongoing vitality of the graduate medical education and training programs. As the Designated Institutional Official, this person will oversee and administer the compliance assurance of the various specialty programs with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Educational (ACGME) Institutional, Common, and specialty-specific Program Requirements. Given these important expectations across education, training, compliance and practice, the position of the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official reports dually to the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Chief Medical Officer for MU Health Care.

The Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/DIO will develop strategic planning for graduate medical education and work with the SOM and hospital leadership to plan new and existing program growth in alignment with the overall health care system strategic plans. It is also expected that the ADGME and DIO roles will account for approximately 60% of the anticipated workload of this individual, with the remaining appointment preserved for the physician to provide clinical care, education and scholarly work in their representative specialty area. The exact amount of time and service may depend on the specialty area of the successful candidate, but their enthusiasm and dedication to high quality patient care as a member of the University Physicians is expected.

The successful candidate will possess a medical doctorate and the ability to obtain a Physician Medical License in Missouri with required Board Certification in Specialty Discipline. The university seeks a physician leader with at least 10 years of prior experience in clinical practice and/or graduate medical education administration. Experience in various health care delivery models, health information and the rules and regulations surrounding their use and release are encouraged. Prior experience as a Program Director, Associate DIO, and/or DIO at a comparable institution is ideal.

The University anticipates this appointment will be made in the late summer/early fall of 2021. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For full consideration, applicant material should be received by Monday, June 14, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.

Candidates should include a cover letter outlining leadership qualifications, practice, teaching and/or research interests, as well as a detailed curriculum vitae. Later in the search process, additional information may be sought from interested candidates, along with names and contact information for at least 5 references. Candidates will be notified before references are contacted.
