The Department of Surgery at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center and Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH), Charlotte, North Carolina, is seeking a Chief for the Division of Pediatric Surgery, who will also serve as the Atrium Health Enterprise Chief Pediatric Surgical Officer. Candidates should be a recognized academic clinician-researcher, at the Associate or Professor level, possess strong leadership abilities, management experience in multidisciplinary/multi-professional environments, and the ability to influence, negotiate, and motivate collaborators to build a culture of quality and responsiveness. Candidates should be committed to excellent patient care, research, and leadership on local and national levels. Candidates should also have a strong commitment to the education of residents, medical students, and advanced practice professionals (APPs). The Division Chief will provide a vision and strategic direction for development of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Levine Children’s Hospital, as well as leadership, supervision, and accountability to fulfill the education, research, clinical and administrative service missions and values of the Department of Surgery and Levine Children’s Hospital. The Chief of Pediatric Surgery will have operational responsibility for pediatric general surgery with local accountability to the LCH Surgeon-in-Chief and the President of Levine Children’s Hospital. Further, as the Chief Pediatric Surgical Officer, he/she will have strategic oversight of all surgical services for children across Atrium Health’s Children’s Hospitals, including Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC, the Jeff Gordon Children’s Center in Concord, NC, and the Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital in Macon, GA, and Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.

The Department of Surgery has 68 full-time clinical faculty and 6 Ph.D. translational and basic science researchers. In addition to Pediatric Surgery, other Divisions include Abdominal Transplant Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Gastrointestinal/Minimally Invasive Surgery, Hepatopancreatic and Biliary Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Surgical Oncology. The General Surgery residency matches 6 categorical residents per year and 2 preliminary residents for the PGY-1 year.  Fellowships are offered in Bariatric Surgery, Breast Oncology, GI/MIS, HPB Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. Non-clinical activities will report through the Department of Surgery, accountable to the Chair of the Department, and include research, resident rotations, medical student clerkships, and scholarship activities. The Carolinas Center for Surgical Outcomes Science in the Department of Surgery can provide analytical, methodology, writing/editing support to the Division of Pediatric Surgery. 

Levine Children’s Hospital is a comprehensive 236-bed tertiary/quaternary care children’s hospital within the Atrium Health system.  The largest children’s hospital between Atlanta and Washington D.C., Levine Children’s Hospital has been recognized for the 12th year in a row, by U.S. News & World Report for our specialty care and has been named the only Best Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. We offer over 30 specialty programs and more than 200 pediatric specialists at Levine Children’s Hospital, including pediatric intensive care and an 85-bed Level V neonatal intensive care unit. The F.H. “Sammy” Ross Trauma Center at Carolinas Medical Center is the busiest in the state of North Carolina, with more than 5,100 trauma code activations, and is the 6th highest trauma volume hospital in the United States. Pediatric trauma care at Levine Children’s Hospital is an integral part of the trauma program, and is an ACS verified Level I pediatric trauma center. Atrium Health’s Children’s Hospitals together have over 21,500 annual discharges, 537 licensed beds, and 8 NICUs.

Among Charlotte's many notable attractions, some of the most popular include the Carolina Panthers of the NFL, the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA, the Charlotte Knights of the International League, the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL, the Charlotte Independence of the USL, the Charlotte Hounds of Major League Lacrosse, two NASCAR Cup Series races and the NASCAR All-Star Race, the Wells Fargo Championship, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the Charlotte Ballet, Children's Theatre of Charlotte, Carowinds amusement park, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

Charlotte has a humid subtropical climate. It is located several miles east of the Catawba River and southeast of Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. Lake Wylie and Mountain Island Lake are two smaller man-made lakes located near the city.
