Denver Health Adult Emergency Medicine - Associate Medical Director Opportunity

The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Denver Health and Hospital Authority is recruiting an energetic and talented emergency physician to be Associate Medical Director of the Adult Emergency Department and the Director of Patient Experience for the Department of Emergency Medicine.

A major academic affiliate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver Health is the academic health care system for the City and County of Denver, Colorado. Approximately 100,000 patients are seen annually in our adult emergency department and pediatric ED and urgent care. Based at Denver Health, the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine is the only one of its kind in Colorado and has operated continuously since 1974.

A level one trauma center, the adult ED encompasses 51 dedicated acute treatment spaces and a 23-bed ED observation unit. The adult ED has a 25% admission rate; more than 60% of Denver Health’s admissions come from the ED. Staffing is provided by board-certified emergency physicians, PGY 1- 4 residents, emergency medicine subspecialty fellows, and an established group of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. Nursing leadership is stable and the relationship is close and highly collaborative.

The Adult ED Associate Medical Director is a key member of the ED operations team, which is responsible for the daily operations of the adult ED, including relations with consulting departments and support services, the adult ED quality and safety program, and process improvement initiatives. In particular, this individual will serve as the Director of Patient Experience for the ED, working collaboratively with a dyad partner in nursing leadership to plan patient experience initiatives in the ED. They will report to the Medical Director of the Adult Emergency Department.  All faculty physicians contribute to the patient care, educational, and research missions of the department, and all have faculty appointments in the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Denver Health and the Department of Emergency Medicine are profoundly committed to diversity of thought and our workforce. As medical providers, we are passionate about serving our diverse patient population and providing them with the best care. To achieve this, we are dedicating significant resources as a leadership team to incorporate cultural responsiveness, equity, and inclusion into every aspect of our work. This position will be an important member of that leadership team, and is expected to take an active role in our commitment to creating an environment for patients and staff where richness of ideas, backgrounds, and perspectives are embraced.

The ideal candidate is an experienced emergency physician with a background in ED operations and a passion for innovation and data-driven systems improvement. Candidates with experience and interest in educational or academic initiatives--particular those involving operational or patient experience subjects--are preferred.

This position is available immediately, and applications will be considered in a rolling fashion until the right candidate is found.
