Welcome to Albany! Located about 150 miles north of NY City, 175 miles west of Boston and 40 miles south of Saratoga, Albany is located on the west bank of the Hudson River.  The region has a long history of world-renowned arts, music, dining, horse racing and many other activities.  Albany serves as the capital of NY state, a midway point between the Hudson Valley to the south and the Adirondack Mountains to the north.  Albany is part of what is referred to the Tri-City Area made up of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, with close access to the neighboring small cities of Saratoga, Lake George and Lake Placid.  Albany is also home to excellent primary and secondary educational facilities provided by public and private systems. Over 30 post-secondary institutions are located within 60-miles, including the State University of NY at Albany, Union College, Siena College, College of St. Rose, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to name a few.

With events scheduled locally throughout the year, the Capital District also hosts the NY State Museum, NY State Theatre Institute, Albany Symphony Orchestra, Capital Repertory Company and a number of galleries and historical sites such as the Albany Institute of Art, Corning Museum, National Baseball Hall of Fame, Fennimore Art Museum, National Women’s Hall of Fame, Saratoga Automobile Museum, National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame, and so much more. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is the summer residence of the NY City Ballet and other international artists who perform with the Lake George Opera Company.

For water and fishing enthusiasts, NY has more than 7,600 freshwater lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, as well as portions of two of the five Great Lakes along with over 70,000 miles of rivers and streams that provide a never-ending supply of outdoor activities.  Upstate NY also boasts miles of hiking, spelunking, biking, golf, tennis, parks, and general recreational areas.  For winter enthusiasts, NY is home to the most ski slopes in the nation with the state’s largest at Gore Mountain, in addition to several dozen more located in nearby New England.  Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and ice skating provide additional winter sport opportunities.

Albany maintains a lively downtown with old-world appeal that serves as both a commercial and cultural center.  The region doesn't have the crowds or costs of a major metropolitan area but still provides the many activities found there. There are rows of colorfully painted houses, turn-of-the-century brownstones, the historic state capitol building and NY Education Building that features a 36-column colonnade (one of the longest in the world), and the Empire State Plaza which includes the iconic Egg Theater.  Nearby is NY state's Finger Lakes wine region to the west and Massachusetts' Berkshire Mountains to the east with Tanglewood music venue in proximity.  The region is a springboard for foodies, music, art, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. (US News profile written by Katrina Woznicki).  Additionally, Albany has been recognized as the “Crossroads of the East,” due its capability as a major transportation center, which includes excellent interstate highways, air, rail, and bus services, facilitating travel to all surrounding areas.
