Surgeon and Director, Health Services Research

The University of Chicago's Department of Surgery is searching for a full-time physician-scientist faculty member at any rank to create and lead a newly formed Surgical Health Services Research unit within the Department of Surgery. The surgeon-scientist will be responsible for developing and directing an interdisciplinary strategy for the Department of Surgery to lead ongoing efforts to grow, promote, and support clinical research and scholarship. Applicants from all specialties (cardiac, trauma, general surgery, transplant, vascular, urology, etc) are encouraged to apply. We especially welcome applicants with a strong track record of peer-reviewed funding in health services research as evidenced by NIH/AHRQ or similar grants and the demonstrated ability to form productive, collaborative research teams including mentoring of trainees and junior faculty. Compensation, academic rank, and tenure are dependent upon qualifications; the position will include a generous package of start-up funds as well as standard fringe benefits.

The appointee is expected to help recruit and mentor new investigators in surgical health services and to build collaborative teams with other faculty within the department across all subspecialties to advance health services and outcome research and implementation science in clinical quality initiatives.

The appointee will have inpatient and outpatient clinical responsibilities in their area of specialty, with clinical effort suitably adjusted to account for research and administrative roles depending on experience and qualifications.

The Department of Surgery has a rich history of supporting and promoting basic and translation science in, among other areas, cancer research, infection pathogenesis, transplant immunology, the molecular physiology of cardiac disease, epithelial and vascular biology as it relates to surgical pathology and clinical outcomes research.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: (1) have completed a doctoral degree or equivalent, (2) be board certified or eligible by the American Board of Surgery and pertinent subspecialty, if applicable (or equivalent), and (3) have completed an accredited fellowship or equivalent training in their respective area of practice and be able to obtain permanent and unrestricted Illinois licensure.
