Who May Apply: Physician (Cardiology/Interventional)

Interventional Cardiologist needed to support the second largest military Hospital in the National Capital Region, treating a beneficiary population of almost 100,000 active duty, retired and dependent patients. Located in beautiful Northern Virginia, approximately 30 minutes from Washington D.C. State of the art combined interventional cardiology and interventional radiology suite with 3 procedure rooms. The physician shall provide the services Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology providing interventional, invasive, and non-invasive cardiovascular disease services for two tertiary facilities, primary location is the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital (FBCH) located in Fort Belvoir, Virginia and one day a week at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) located in Bethesda, Maryland. These medical facilities serve as Department of Defense cardiovascular referral centers. The Cardiology Service provides treatment capabilities to include invasive diagnostic testing, such as cardiac catheterizations and transesophageal echocardiograms, and non-invasive multi-modality cardiovascular imaging, such as 2D/Stress echocardiograms, nuclear perfusion imaging, and cardiac CTA imaging. Opportunity to teach and perform research, but this is not required for the position. Fort Belvoir is located in the heart of the DC/VA/MD area and has a modern hospital with wonderful, supportive staff and ample parking. It is surrounded by some of the best school systems in the USA and is family friendly with plenty of things to do and places to see.

Responsibilities

Serves as attending Staff Physician and Subject Matter Expert in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology. Incumbent also serves as a team member of a collaborative health care teams of multiple Military Treatment Facilities (MTF)/Medical Centers (MMC) within an assigned Defense Health Agency (DHA) Market Area.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Conducts examinations and initiates treatment for authorized Department of Defense beneficiaries referred to cardiology services or as assigned for continuity of services. Performs inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular consultation services, as well as consultation for other services hospital-wide. Initiates or conducts standard diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures that may include, but not limited to percutaneous diagnostic right and left cardiac catheterization, right heart oximetry, percutaneous coronary intervention, intravascular ultrasound, fractional flow reserve measurement, pericardiocentesis, placement of intra-aortic balloon pump, use of impella percutaneous left ventricular assist device for augmentation of cardiac function, temporary pacing, direct current cardioversions, stress (chemical and exercise) echocardiography performance/interpretation, transesophageal echocardiogram performance and interpretation, direct current cardioversions, trans-thoracic echocardiogram performance and interpretation, electrocardiogram interpretation, Holter monitor interpretation, and exercise treadmill and chemical stress testing, with and without nuclear perfusion.

2. Leads health care teams comprised of other physicians, non-physician providers, house staff and ancillary staff. Provides supervisory oversight as assigned for section of cardiovascular personnel and services. Provides medical consultative services and chart review for quality assurance purposes or risk management. Conducts and mentors house-staff on cardiovascular research projects, oral and poster presentations, and publications in peer reviewed journals. Supports quality assurance/performance improvement initiatives.

3. Contributes to the teaching of medical learners (medical students, residents, and fellows) through precepting and lecturing in the ambulatory and inpatient settings. Provides academic consultation to other health care providers (GME house-staff, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, cardiovascular technicians, and medical students). Attends, participates, and presenter for academic teaching conferences.

4. Reviews physical requirements and conducts physical examination of various categories of military and civilian personnel. Determines individual fitness for duty utilizing. Established profiles, and referrals to medical evaluation board for active duty personnel.

Performs other duties as assigned.
