The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) invites inquiries, applications and nominations for the position of Chair of Psychiatry and Director of the Psychiatric Research Institute (PRI). This is an extraordinary opportunity for a new chair to build on the strengths of a world-class department both academically and clinically, and to expand the psychiatry program to meet the needs for the region and entire state of Arkansas.

UAMS is a distinguished, comprehensive academic health sciences center comprised of five colleges, a graduate school, seven highly regarded institutes, eight Regional Centers and a comprehensive Medical Center. UAMS is the largest public employer in the state of Arkansas with more than 11,000 employees and is the state’s only academic health sciences center.

The Department of Psychiatry/Psychiatric Research Institute (PRI) is one of the major psychiatric research, education and clinical care centers in the region with training sites including the main PRI facility, PRI-Northwest, Arkansas State Hospital, the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and the Centers for Youth and Families. The department and institute are both highly regarded at UAMS. The department’s research in the areas of brain imaging, addiction, and health services represent significant strengths. The department’s educational programs, from medical student education to the psychiatry residency and fellowship programs, child psychiatry fellowship, and the psychology internship and fellowships, are respected both locally and nationally and are an integral part of the department. The PRI also provides a number of research fellowships for appropriate candidates. The PRI provided world-class clinical care via more than 95,000 patient visits in its outpatient clinics and more than 1,550 patients in its 40-bed inpatient unit on campus during the last fiscal year.

The Chair of Psychiatry/Director of the PRI will build upon the successful history of PRI and has responsibility for the overall strategic leadership, direction and management of the Department of Psychiatry and the PRI, with a combined operating budget of $40 million and 86 employee faculty members and 267 non-faculty staff members.

Candidates must possess an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree and board certification in psychiatry. The successful candidate must also demonstrate: 1) progressive administrative leadership experience in an integrated academic medical center environment, 2) track record of externally-funded research and high impact publications, 3) national recognition for achievement in educational and/or clinical pursuits, and 4) the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in the department and across multiple disciplines. It is expected that the successful candidate will possess a clear vision for advancing outstanding clinical care, education and research at UAMS and within the State of Arkansas at a time of healthcare evolution.

Please direct all nominations and applications (including a CV and Cover Letter) to Joyce DeLeo, PhD, Stephen Davis, and Ashley Rittgers of WittKieffer, preferably via e-mail, to UAMS_Psychiatry@wittkieffer.com or phone at (757) 743-7515.
