The Department of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health is recruiting an Associate Director of Service (ADOS) to serve as Medical Director to a new Clinical Decision Unit (CDU). This academic position will be responsible for leadership and oversight of a new protocolized 23-bed CDU designed to provide the highest quality of care and patient experience to observation-status patients. This unit will be directly adjacent to the main emergency department, staffed with emergency medicine health care providers and nurses, and serve a critical role in our hospital’s patient flow and clinical excellence. Thirty percent of this position’s time will be protected for leadership and administrative responsibilities related to the CDU. Clinical responsibilities will include both rounding in the CDU and working in the Adult Emergency Department.
The emergency department (ED) at Denver Health includes a 44-bed adult ED with an additional 19-bed pediatric ED and urgent care, a 13-bed fast track area, and an adjacent 23-bed clinical decision unit. With a combined annual census of more than 100,000 patients, the ED at Denver Health is the second busiest in Colorado and home to the Ernest E. Moore Shock Trauma Center at Denver Health, the primary trauma referral center for the Rocky Mountain Region. Additionally, the acuity managed by the adult ED is high, with a 25% admission rate. Staffing in the adult and pediatric EDs is provided by board-certified emergency physicians, PGY 1- 4 residents, emergency medicine subspecialty fellows, and advanced practice providers. Strong and extremely collaborative relationships exist among physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, and consultative services.
