Are you interested in a truly unique opportunity to serve as an executive leader in the world’s largest hospital entirely devoted to translational clinical research?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) invites candidates with strong operational, clinical research, and leadership credentials to apply for the position of Clinical Director (Chief Medical Officer) at the NIH Clinical Center (CC) located in Bethesda, MD. The NIH CC is the largest hospital in the world totally dedicated to translational clinical research. The hospital maintains a 200-bed capacity that supports the intramural research programs of Institutes and Centers across the NIH. As a senior executive and principal medical advisor to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the successful candidate will lead multiple clinical departments of about 1200 staff in a complex clinical research setting.

The CC is the epicenter for intramural research and collaboration at NIH. An individual selected for this position will keep the CEO and COO apprised of the many aspects of patient care, research, research compliance and Joint Commission requirements. The successful candidate will serve as the CC Clinical Director (Chief Medical Officer) and collaborate with the Clinical and Scientific Directors of the 18 NIH Institutes and Centers with intramural clinical research programs to achieve their research goals while ensuring the principles of high reliability in healthcare at the CC.

We seek an experienced and proven leader who possesses exceptional communication skills, the ability to drive operational changes to enhance high quality clinical programs, a strong focus on ensuring patient safety, a high level of comfort leading, consulting and advising a diverse clinical research workforce and running high quality patient care operations in a complex hospital setting. The ability to form partnerships and provide sound guidance at all levels within a complex clinical research setting is key in the performance of routine duties associated with this position. Candidates must be experienced and proven leaders with advanced strategic management and organizational principles and practices.

The ideal candidate must possess a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, be board certified in a relevant clinical area and have demonstrated experience in a primarily clinical research setting. A track record of excellence in research collaboration or a contemporary independent research program is desirable. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the willingness to contribute to the achievement of investigators and clinicians throughout the NIH. As this position is primarily administrative in nature, candidates will not be expected to develop an independent research program.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement; health; life and long-term care insurance; Thrift Savings Plan; etc.) is available. Relocation expenses may be approved for the selectee. Please include in your application a description of mentoring and outreach activities, especially those involving women and persons from racial/ethnic or other groups underrepresented in biomedical research.
