The Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) is seeking an Endocrinologist with a focus on diabetes for a tenure track appointment as an Associate Professor. A strong track record in clinical, community oriented or outcomes research with a focus on health disparities in the area of diabetes is required. For the properly qualified candidate, we will consider awarding a prestigious Endowed Chair for Diabetes Research.  The position includes an appointment in the Division of Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders within the Department of Internal Medicine. The candidate will receive protected time as well as startup funds to help the research efforts. The candidate is expected to participate in the clinical, educational & research activities of the Division and the Strelitz Diabetes Center (SDC).

Clinical activities will include both outpatient and inpatient consult services at EVMS, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and if necessary at other sites under direction of the Division. The candidate will participate in educational activities of fellows, residents and students.  The candidate is expected to participate in research related to health disparities to develop clinical, community and outcomes research programs in the areas of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular risk factors within the SDC.

The successful candidate has completed a fellowship in Endocrinology and is BC/BE in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, and had 5 or more years of experience, in particular in research activities. 

The position is aligned with the EVMS 2020 Strategic Plan for Advancing Health Equity and Inclusion for Community and Academic Impact, which has as a key objective the promotion of research addressing causes and prevention of health disparities in the Hampton Roads region.  The selected candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with a team of multidisciplinary health disparities researchers with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics and population health management and to be part of new initiatives in community engagement by the medical school. Opportunities also exist to collaborate with translational and basic researchers conducting biomarker discovery.

The Division of Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders runs the Strelitz Diabetes Center as well as general endocrine clinics.  It has an ACGME accredited Endocrinology fellowship program. In addition, it maintains an ADA recognized diabetes program and owns a thyroid ultrasound & DEXA scan. It collaborates with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, our primary teaching hospital, and has developed an innovative inpatient Cardiovascular Diabetes Program. In addition, the division has years of experience working and collaborating with the underserved communities of Norfolk as well as the Western Tidewater area of Virginia. It also has a highly developed clinical research manpower and infrastructure. The Sentara Diabetes Program and Heart Program have both been highly ranked nationally by the US News & World for many years.
