Job Description

The Bureau of Communicable Disease at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH) is seeking a physician experienced in public health, hepatitis B and C clinical practice, drug user health and immigrant health to guide clinical activities within the Viral Hepatitis Program (VHP). BCD oversees surveillance and outbreak investigations for more than 70 reportable diseases. VHP conducts surveillance and applied research, policy and program development and implementation, program evaluation, provider training, community coalition building, community and health department navigation programs and public education awareness initiatives, in the areas of prevention, linkage to care and treatment for hepatitis B and C.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • Take a leadership role in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of a NYC Viral Hepatitis Elimination Plan, including community and DOHMH stakeholder engagement.
  • Lead clinical capacity building initiatives for hepatitis B and C in NYC, including developing guidance, spearheading outreach to clinical organizations, assessment of clinical needs, development and implementation of effective interventions to improve clinical care, and dissemination of effective interventions.
  • Support VHP Directors to develop, implement, monitor, evaluate and disseminate surveillance, program and research initiatives.
  • Take a leadership role in Viral Hepatitis Program development and sustainability, including strategic integration of surveillance and programs, securing staff lines, applying for grant and city funding to carry out surveillance and program activities at DOHMH and in the community, and advocating for the program within DOHMH and the City administration.
  • Serve as the principal investigator on grants, overseeing IRB, legal and fiscal compliance. Support program Directors and managers to complete grant deliverables, reports and applications.
  • Develop innovative projects to address gaps in viral hepatitis care in NYC.
  • Set priorities and ensure that viral hepatitis work is in alignment with Bureau, Division, and Agency goals; and promote and prioritize health equity, and racial and social justice.

Minimum Qual Requirements

Preferred Skills

  • Expertise in viral hepatitis clinical care, drug user health and immigrant health, Master in Public Health or other public health or program development and implementation training
  • Experience in program development, implementation and evaluation, including using data to monitor quality improvement
  • Grant writing and administration experience; supervisory and team-building experience
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate expertly with clinical and non- clinical providers
  • Ability to handle multiple and diverse assignments.

Minimum Qual Requirements

  1. Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in an approved medical specialty; and four years of medical practice including one year of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that listed in "1" above. However, all candidates must have a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and one year of medical practice in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
