The Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons (ACS or the College) invites applications for the position of Executive Director. The College is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 by Franklin H. Martin, MD, FACS for the primary purpose of educating and training surgeons to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the quality of care for surgical patients. The College has more than 82,000 members, referred to as “Fellows”, making it the largest organization of surgeons in the world. 

The Executive Director provides overall leadership for the College and works collaboratively with its Board of Regents to establish strategic priorities. The Executive Director is responsible for day-to-day oversight of activities of the College’s 450 employees and approximately 275 volunteers. The Executive Director, under the direction of the Board of Regents, provides leadership for strategic planning; major advocacy efforts; broad based communications; diverse standard setting activities; relationship building with members and other constituencies; and activities that generate non-dues revenue. 

The Executive Director must be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons with significant, successful leadership experience in a high performing and diversified healthcare organization. The Executive Director will be deeply committed to the College’s mission and values. The Executive Director will be an innovative and strategic thinker with excellent communication and interpersonal skills that engender respect. The Executive Director will possess strong business, organizational, analytical, and fiscal knowledge and skills.  The Executive Director will be based in Chicago, Illinois.
