Search for the Senior Vice President for Health Affairs

University of Southern California

Los Angeles, CA

The University of Southern California (USC), one of the world’s leading private research universities and the oldest private research university in the western United States, seeks a Senior Vice President for Health Affairs (SVP). USC’s health science enterprise is poised for significant growth and high impact, and thus has ambitious and achievable goals for the future: double the size of the health and biomedical research enterprise, build a top 20 “medical school for the future”, and scale the health system to a $5 billion+ enterprise. With a new leadership structure, a new Health System Board, plans for a substantial capital expansion, and an upcoming multi-billion dollar capital campaign, the SVP will lead USC’s health sciences into a new era of expansion and influence.

Over the span of its history, the University has achieved unrivaled advances in academic rigor and reputation, faculty prominence, the size and influence of its research portfolio, the level of interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration, and the strength of its undergraduate and graduate education. USC brings together world class research and interdisciplinary educational offerings, rooted in one of the most innovative cities in the world, and informed by a global perspective. With that foundation, USC can now truly attain its destiny as the leading private university with the deep public mission, particularly in Los Angeles. Last year, the campus welcomed its new President, Carol Folt, and new Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Charles “Chip” Zukoski, and the sense of excitement and energy at USC is palpable.

The SVP will report directly to the President, and work in close partnership with the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and the senior executive team. The SVP will also be a key member of the Health Sciences Board. As part of the new leadership structure, the SVP will directly oversee the CEO of Keck Medicine (the main university hospital), and the Dean of the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM); both positions are ready for their next era of leadership. While the other health sciences schools and programs will report to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs for tenure and promotion, they will have a dotted line report to the SVP concerning the other mission areas.

The SVP will lead the development of strategic priorities of USC’s health and biomedical sciences programs across clinical care, research, education, and community service, developing and building a senior leadership team to drive this agenda forward. Specifically, this leader will position USC to be a dominant clinical player in LA’s intensely competitive healthcare market; drive a research engine with considerable resources and infrastructure to support the doubling of research funding; and lead the health sciences to educate the next generation of leaders who will shape the future of healthcare. Perhaps most important, the SVP will develop a strategy that integrates, aligns, and focuses the clinical, research, and academic missions. To achieve this, the SVP must be a collaborative and deliberate leader, possess and demonstrate the highest personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and have the ability to create a meaningful sense of community and purpose for the entire medical enterprise. The SVP will be expected to develop innovative financial strategies that are robust and sustainable, including clinical revenues, research funding, tuition, and philanthropy. Specifically, the SVP will:

  • Develop and execute key strategic priorities for USC’s academic health and biomedical sciences programs across all mission objectives;
  • Embolden the deep commitment to diversity, inclusion, and health equity;
  • Lead Keck Medicine in healthcare innovation and as it pursues market growth;
  • Dramatically grow the health sciences and the biomedical research enterprise;
  • Inspire educational innovation and excellence across the health sciences;
  • Serve as the external representative of the health science enterprise and lead the development of significant philanthropic support for the health sciences at USC.
