Search for Director, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine

University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine

The Department of Medicine (DOM) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine welcomes applications and nominations for their next Director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. The Director will have the opportunity to elevate an already outstanding Division; UAB is ranked by US News and World Report as the #1 hospital in pulmonology in the 11 states of the Southeast, and #25 in the country. Pulmonary critical care is the vanguard of UAB’s COVID response, demonstrating the flexibility and capability of the Division.

Over the past decade, the Division has grown in its reach and reputation across the tripartite missions. It has built nationally recognized, interdisciplinary clinical programs in acute and chronic lung disease (including ALI/ARDS, Asthma, COPD, Cystic fibrosis, IPF, sleep disorders), attracting patients from around the world. The Division’s total funding has increased from $6 million in 2009 to over $23 million in 2019, with a current portfolio comprising >20 R01-funded investigators, several P and U research grants hosting multi-investigator programs, and two T32 research training programs and multiple K awardees that fill a robust pipeline for future research leaders. Educationally, the Division’s large and successful fellowship program provides tracks for physician-scientists and clinician-educators and has the only nationally accredited Sleep Medicine Fellowship Training Program in the state of Alabama.

The Division is central to the Department of Medicine, and the new Director will report to, and work closely with the Chair, Dr. Seth Landefeld. The Director is responsible for the clinical, academic, educational, and administrative activities of the Division, as well as the fostering of an inclusive, equitable environment. To be successful, the Director must integrate all mission areas, promoting academic productivity and meeting the Division’s clinical service needs, while overseeing a successful fellowship program. The Director must nurture an environment that values team-based care and interdisciplinary research, by bringing research and clinical faculty together. The successful candidate will grow the Division through strategic recruitment to expand the areas of pulmonary, allergy, and critical care medicine.

The new Division Director will be an accomplished leader, physician, teacher, and investigator with demonstrated accomplishments in translational research. This person will exhibit the qualities required for being a successful leader in a complex, matrixed environment, including the ability to work collaboratively across the various organizations, and to promote the Division internally, as well as with community providers and leaders, donors, and other pertinent external entities. A deep personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential, as is a passion for mentoring and developing faculty and fellows.

UAB has engaged Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the search.
