Responsibilities
The Hershel "Woody" Williams VAMC is seeking a permanent full-time Orthopedic Surgeon to assume a staff position. The facility is seeking candidates with excellent clinical skills and experience in the full range of general orthopedic care including major joint replacement. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

1. The individual is responsible for maintenance of the highest standards of professional care in the outpatient and inpatient management of orthopedic patients served by the facility. Managing difficult outpatient, inpatient and operative orthopedic cases and make expert recommendations to the Chief of Surgery regarding definitive management of these cases. Provides professional services requiring full range of inpatient and outpatient Orthopedic Surgery services consistent with the hospital's capabilities at Huntington VA Medical Center.
* Provides surgical services and diagnostic procedures that are clear, concise, and in keeping with modern medical terminology.
* Provides immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur to individuals presented for care. Provides professional advice to Surgical staff upon request and in emergency situations regarding professional management of patients being treated.
* Responsible for all administrative activities normally associated with patient care in a setting hospital such as consults, encounters, PEER and legal reviews. Maintains required continued Medical Education through conferences, reading programs or other approved CME events.
* Facilitates patient access to medical care by recommending appropriate referrals to other health care providers in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.
* Responsible for providing specialty care and coverage on-call in accordance with department policy and requirements
* Provide direct patient care as well as resident supervision and clinical instruction in the operating room, outpatient clinic and inpatient settings
* Provides immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur to individuals presented for care.
2. Responsible for the education of medical students and training of interns, residents, technicians, and other physicians.

3. All other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the Agency, Department, Facility, and/or Service

Work Schedule:Monday thru Friday; 8:00AM - 4:30PM, however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/Medical Center. May be responsible for on-call services (includes nights, weekends and holidays).

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
* Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
* Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
* Board Certification: Physicians are generally not required to be board certified for employment in VA; however, three circumstances in VA require physician board certification:
* If the position being filled is required to be a supervisor for medical students or physician residents (including fellows), the LCME, ACGME or AOA standards requiring a particular board certification credential will apply.
* If the position being filled will have faculty status with an affiliated medical school (for example, in joint recruitments with affiliated medical schools), then a medical school requirement for board certification will apply to the jointly recruited position.
* If the position being filled is required to be board certified by virtue of specific VHA policy (for example, as director of a cardiac catheterization laboratory or Director of Clinical Laboratory Medicine), then VHA policy requiring board certification will apply.
* Proficiency in spoken and written English.
* Physical requirement: Must have the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment, pass the requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies and meet the Physical requirements below.
PHYSICIAN STAFF REQUIREMENTS.

Staff Physician.None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.Physical Requirements:The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.
