Physician - Ambulatory/Outpatient Primary Care Clinic (Des Moines)
Physicians have direct access to other care providers like clinical pharmacists, social workers, primary care based mental health and behavioral health providers, dieticians, and other clinical providers that will work together with you in shared or individualized patient visits. Full time physician panels are typically made up of up to 1,200 Veterans. Clinic schedules run one hour for new patients or preoperative clearances and 30 minutes for follow up appointments.
Daily schedules will have built in time for administrative duties, i.e. documenting clinical visits and encounters in our electronic medical record system. DRAGON speech recognition and dictation software is available for those that request it. Some physicians may be assigned duties supervising an advanced practitioner (physician assistant or nurse practitioner).
Common duties of the position may include:
- Physician will provide primary care outpatient services to all patients assigned to them.
- The provider will manage scheduled and unscheduled patients in the outpatient clinic setting.
- Primary providers in the outpatient setting are assigned a panel of patients to manage.
- Alternative or collateral duties may include management of a subsection of primary care patients.
- During employment, participation in special projects pertinent to assigned sub-specialty may be necessary as the projects become available with strategic or other initiatives.
- Timely documentation in all areas in accordance with departmental policy.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): AuthorizedThis position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and apply for EDRP within four (4) months of appointment. Final award amount and program start date is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.
