The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is conducting an international search for an outstanding accomplished professional to provide administrative leadership and assume full responsibility for all areas of management in the role of Chair of the Department of Surgical Oncology in the Division of Surgery.

The candidate should be an accomplished clinical leader, nationally recognized with a strong clinical and academic reputation and who has the leadership competencies to further develop a nationally-recognized department including finance and budget, long range planning, resource allocations, space administration and faculty development.

The Chair will actively engage in, encourage and foster development of clinical and translational research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the department and will practice surgical oncology in an exemplary manner. This position entails responsibility for maintaining and enhancing the content of the didactic program and technical training for the department’s residents and fellows. Additional responsibilities include pursuit of appropriate funding mechanisms in support of research activities and representing the department at the local, state, and national levels. The Chair of the Department of Surgical Oncology reports to the Head of the Division of Surgery; this Division encompasses the departments of Breast Surgical Oncology, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine, Head and Neck Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Urology.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in academic surgical oncology
  • M.D. or equivalent degree and board certification in surgery
  • Demonstration of clinical and academic excellence
  • Demonstration of leadership qualities essential to effectively inspire their team and promote accountability and collaboration across the institution
  • Ability to function effectively in a matrix organization characterized by complex intra- and inter-disciplinary relationships
  • Exceptional collaborative, leadership, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills
  • Proven track record in clinical and/or laboratory research
  • Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure
  • Fellowship training in Surgical Oncology is strongly preferred
